Resurrecting an old thread here, but have two quick questions.

When those who have applied POR-15 with a brush, did you wear a respiratory, or just apply it outside in fresh air?

I am just coating the underside of the mower deck. Based on your experience is it better to remove all bolts and screws from the underside or that protrude into the underside of the deck, or just coat over them? If you removed them, how hard was it to reinstall them (especially the metal screws) since it sounds like POR-15 dries very hard?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, I didn't wear any respirator but painted the deck with a brush near my open garage door for ventilation. The fumes weren't worse than using most paints. I did use the metal degraser and metal prep that I got with the POR-15 and decided that rubber gloves would have been a very good idea. It's rough on the skin. I painted over all the bolts figuring they would be protected also. It does dry very hard. I gave it a good test today. The rear 3/4 acre of my yard has been too wet to mow for a month and I had knee high grass. I cut it three times - once fairly high, second cut lower and the third at normal height with the bagger. The deck didn't clog at all until I puit the bagger on and then I had to clean the discharge chute a few times. I think I used about 10 gallons of gas.

Dascro,
I didn't use a respirator either. I just opened all windows in the garage before I started and I applied it with a brush (this stuff goes a long way). Like Bob said, go over all the bolts for added protection. I have found out too, that my deck doesn't clog, it just spits out the clog and goes on. Wash off is easy too! Just spray the deck when you're done mowing and what residue is there comes right off. This is some awesome coating. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I do appreciate it.

I brushed it on the underside of my mower deck this past weekend. I didn't use a respirator and didn't seem to need one either. The reason I asked the question was driven from the information provided in the literature that accompanies the POR 15, which seems to recommend one in general and requires one if you spray it on.

Anyhow, its done now. I haven't had a chance to mow with it yet, but hopefully it performs as well for me as it does for everyone else. Its does seem to be a very hard coating for sure!!

Digging up an old thread... anybody have some results to report after a few seasons?

I think maybe this is one of those one extreme to the other situations. Some never clean their decks and they rot out. I think if you clean it thoroughly once a year before you put it away, it will last a long time without any coatings. I blow my decks off on the top after every use and keep them inside. I think not doing so, is what rots them out, not what happens underneith so much.

I cleaned up my deck a few years ago and coated it with POR-15 using a brush. A year later much of it had peeled off. Maybe if it was applied when brand new it might hold up better. I also coated the front underframe of my daughter's 1997 Saturn with the same POR-15 and had a similar result. I didn't think the results justified the high price of the coating. YMMV

Greetings,

This thread started in 2007 and recently came back to life.

Maybe back then mower coatings weren't well known . . . But in the last several years spray can based polymers for deck coatings have existed and been improved.

Today . . there is no specisl prep required . . No etching . . No brushing . . No long drying and ventilating time frames.

Its clear and bonds to the painted surface in a clear smooth process that can be cleaned and redone to further improve the results.

Products like No Mower . . . can be used on spindles and underside decks and blades or even snowblower surfaces . . Just like a teflon-type coating.

At 8 bucks a can. Its enough for 2 full coatings on my 54 inch deck and still have enough left foe next year.

Simple, easy, fast, and inexpensive.

POR ? Is that the red paint used on large electric motor windings and inside some equipment gear boxes from the factory?

Each fall I power wash the underside of the deck and spray with WD40. In the spring I spray it again. I get no build up and the deck is clean at the end of the season.
