Rural Garbage Service

Something knocked my can over last night. One bag was in the road getting ran over. Picked up the largest clumps at 6am, but lots of trash along the road in my yard.

Another reason we went with a dumpster. Its a little harder to knock over a 2 yard dumpster than a trash can.

Here it is about a 15 mile round trip to the recycle center...(no local service)...
Can't leave kitchen garbage outside even in heavy duty cans due to animals Bears, foxes, raccoons, dogs etc...

When they opened the recycle centers and made us stop burning garbage...we learned to put meat wrappers etc. (with the absorbent pads) back in the freezer until garbage day...

They also have a bin for recyclables and a spot for tires and used oil (which they're supposed to charge for).

Speaking of used oil, what do you guys do with hazardous waste? Oil's easy, as auto parts stores, garages, etc. by law must accept it but what about stuff like antifreeze, used transmission/hydraulic fluid, old paint thinner, etc.? When I lived in southern N.H. the town I lived in had a hazardous waste day once a year at the transfer station where you could drop this stuff off for free but it doesn't appear anyone up here does that, or if they do it's limited to residents of that particular town. The town I live in is too small to make something like that worthwhile.

Speaking of used oil, what do you guys do with hazardous waste?

for hazardous waste our county has a once a year drop off.......much like you we're a bunch of small towns that can't handle anything like that on their own.......so you might want to check to see if your county has something......Jack

I get a once a week rural collection....two bins, one for recycling. Costs me bout $240 p.a and it's compulsory, no opt-out available. They do collect on a public holiday so they never miss a scheduled day.
If you overfill the bin and the lid isn't flat, they leave a note.
Large items like scrap steel, timber, tires, oil, furniture, concrete etc I take to the depot and that service is free.
There is a hazardous waste section at the depot, drop off any time including weekends, also free.

As what seems typical... the SF Bay Area bills about double the rate most pay elsewhere...

Right now there is a Waste Management battle brewing as there is a part of the city that is only accessible by about a 5 mile on one side on county or 17 miles on the other side on county roads to pick up trash... the franchise clearly states WM will service all residences in the city... seems they claim their cost is over a $25 per 30 gallon can per week...

There is a lot of money in trash... and I know of no other private industry where service is mandatory and if not paid a city/county lien is placed on private property...

For instance... a $110 quarterly bill that is unpaid goes to almost $300 on the first day of the new quarter!!!!
