Flying Squirrel

Went out to refill the bird feeder this morning. Found one of these guys chowing down. He didn't see me until I turned the feeder around. Needless to say we were both startled. He sat there at arms length for 5 seconds then jump into a tree. These guys are very rare around here.

Used to have a nest of them in a window sill in a cabin. Once we figured out what it was we left them. Pretty cool and very cute when little.

Have them here every evening...they like peanuts and sunflower seed...they do not have near the fear of people like grey and ground squirrels do...

I've seen the grays and blacks fly when I hit them with the 12 ga., but never a real flying squirrel.

They are really cool to watch. This summer I went to move a birdhouse to a different tree and found out one was living in it. As I lifted up the house, he promptly exited about 3" from my face. That was a surprise to say the least!

Years ago I was working on a tree crew clearing utility right of ways. I had the chipper going and helmet and ear muffs on and still heard a blood curdling scream from my partner up in the bucket. I though he had cut his arm off or something ! Turns out he cut a dead branch off a tree that had a flying squirrel sleeping inside. Squirrel flew out and landed on his chest, not sure which one was more frightened ! I looked up just in time to see the demon squirrel fly off to quieter digs .
