I never understood the concept of toy guns. Maybe because I was using a real weapon at a very young age and knew what they were. They were not toys. I recall my mother recounting a story about a comment I made ( I have no memory of it) about a friend and his "toy gun" apparently \I said something about guns are not toys they are for hunting. That is what /how I viewed them from 4 yrs on.

Today it would be child abuse. In my earlier years I called it fun.
At 4 and 5, my sister and I were the bird dog (we did not have one) and my dad would send us into the thickets to flush the pheasants.
At 6, I was carrying a 410 single shot.
At 7, I was allowed to carry my 28 Ga semi with one and only one round in it to hunt pheasants.
At 8 I graduated to having more rounds in the mag of the 28 ga.
At 9 I got to try my fathers 12 ga.
At 10 I got a 7mm Remington Mag big game rifle.
At 7, I also got my first mule deer with a 30-30 lever action.

Training and how you are brought up makes the difference.
Guns were never allowed to even be considered a toy. I was trained to know what they did and what they could do. Never a doubt or a thought about anything else; unlike today's video games but that is another topic.

Not that I disagree with you, but I do have a different perspective. I was born just before WWII during the last years of the depression. No TV; country folks who didn't have much, but did get to go to a Roy Rogers or Gene Autry movie once in a while and listen to the Lone Ranger on radio. Dad had a Remington single shot .22 and a Model 12 shotgun that he bought second hand from folks who were down on their luck. Most of the game had been killed for meat or hides; deer hunting was pretty slim, although there were a few around. I never saw a bobcat, turkey or a beaver until the late 90's. Poor country folks lived on fish, squirrels, rabbits and waterfowl; gathered native pecans, black walnuts, Dew Berries, Possum Grapes and wild Hazel nuts (some wild strawberries, but they were too much trouble).

Kid played cowboys and Indians...a lot...but there was never a moment that we didn't know the difference between reality and make believe. Good toy guns were hard to come by, until after the war. We made "rubber" guns and played with them, until rubber inner tubes were no longer available during the war. I got a Red Ryder BB gun at about age 10 or 12, was taught to use it and handle it safely. Got a .22 at age 13, but was expected to use it to put squirrel and rabbit on the table...which I did. In a nutshell, the kids I grew up with in rural Oklahoma and although we played with toy guns, we were taught about guns at an early age and gave them the respect they deserved. Of course, most of them could handle a tractor at age 12 or so, and some even drove a truck during wheat harvest.

City kids on the other hand, for the most part had to go to the zoo to see something as exotic as a pig; their shoes probably never touched anything except concrete. Most had never seen a pheasant or a quail, let alone eaten one. Guns were for cops or criminals. IMHO, folks who challenge Law Enforcement Officers are asking for trouble, so why are they surprised when they get arrested for being uncooperative, and why are they surprised when they get shot brandishing a gun...real or otherwise? If nothing else, you should have in the back of your mind the fact that here is a person of authority, carrying a loaded gun, that is giving you instructions...even if the possibility that he/she might be a raving maniac who will shoot your appendages off is remote, why be an idiot and take a chance? As for the topic in question, I agree with the OP, but understand that Google (or whoever the offender was) knows that the rest of the world may not understand.

When I was a kid I played cowboys and indians with cast metal cap guns. When I got a BB gun, it was shot at targets and things but NEVER was it used playing cowboys and indians.
Parents who give these things to children with no rules or guidance are the problem. When they fail as parents they want to blame the cops.

Children without rules is the main problem we have here in the USA. Those children grow up with the expectation of no consequences for their actions.

In the eight grade we had a rod and gun club and took our guns to school for club meetings and cleaning. We had whole school assemblies to go over gun safety.

Try that today.

Let's talk about "back when I was in school" metal shop first year, made a letter opener, with a Woden handle.(basically a hunting knife with a duller blade"
Second year we made a working miniature cannon.
Wood shop we made a gun rack, with room for 2 long guns, 2 pistols, and a drawer for ammo.
Think they could make any of those in a shop class now?
