Tricks and tips to handle the cold

At -40F or C it doesn't make any difference, your warmish hands will stick to steel/aluminum. Whatever you do, DO NOT lick the steel pole. The only way to get the tongue off is with warm water or lose skin.

If you have a runny nose at those temps, your snot will freeze to your mustache. Don't run and try breathing through your mouth. You will freeze your lungs, so I have been told. I don't know if that is BS or not, but I was told that. I don't run at the best of times.

-37 yesterday morning. Lots of layers and a Columbia BREATHEABLE jacket. Sat on the ATV and plowed no problem. Driving down to the next property, however, it was another matter. I should've had my full-face, heated helmet on. Had to drive very slow, or the tiny bits of my face that were exposed would have frozen.

It was not -37 in Toronto yesterday.... stop trying to scare the southerners. Actually Torontonians ARE southeners...lol.

I day it was 20 degrees. Yesterday it was 21 with 18 mph winds. I had long underwear, some quick dry pants, tshirt, underarmour long sleeve, and a wool hunting jacket. Gloves and a thick cap and I was fine. The only thing I neglected was lip balm and I didn't drink enough water. I know 20 degrees for a high is child's play for some of you, but what are your little tricks to handle the cold?

Most northerners do not go out on windy days... that's the trick. Wind can make even moderate cold life threatening.

I was cutting wood today-about 15 degrees here with a little wind. I had on Underarmour underwear, jeans, a wool undershirt, and a wool shirt. I was warm. As others have said, it's the wind that can make all the difference, as well as physical activity. I have spent hours on a tractor in 30 degree weather. I had on all the clothes above, as well as a Carhartt -and wasn't too warm.

The inverse of a frog in a pot of water being brought to a slow boil. As the days get cooler just keep going outside to work. Eventually you're out there in 0 degree weather and not giving it a thought. This winter has been a little rougher since it's been pretty warm, the occasional cold days take a little more thought. Layers can overcome temperature, getting out of the wind helps, and always having a warm pair of gloves to change into is a big one for me.

You loose the most heat from your head. Make sure you have a good, warm stocking hat that covers the ears.

Move to North Dakota for a few years

After that, it never gets to be winter anywhere else.

Yes, Some places have tough springs and falls, but it never is really winter. ;-)
