We don't have them here any more either.. they dropped it a few years ago.
Because they realized it is a waste of time and taxpayer money and has no positive effects.

Wow! They actually do indoor recess for smog?
A few years ago it was common in Los Angeles several days every school year. I haven't seen anything in the paper for several years now but I'm 400 miles north of LA.

There have been a lot of state regulations restricting ag burning, paint solvent volatility, no new home fireplaces, and of course the vehicle stuff. I think the restrictions finally turned the trend around and there are fewer days now that exceed safe limits.

The photo I posted matches what I have seen too many times, coming down off the Sierras into the Central Valley on a hot summer Sunday afternoon. You see that, drive into it, and you understand why people who live there demanded that government 'Do Something About This!!!'. And really, LA was a lot worse than this 20 years ago when I often had assignments there and went down weekly. There are mountains maybe 15 miles from downtown LA and every afternoon, you couldn't see them through smog worse than this photo.

I don't think California has had safety inspections in my lifetime aside from fixit tickets, re-registering a salvage title vehicle, etc where there is a need to verify that repairs were sufficient.

The only other safety inspection is when a Dealer retails a used vehicle... in addition to smog the dealer is required to inspect/repair the braking system and inspect Seat Belts... I know I had to install a lot of seatbelts in older cars when I was a kid...

The Air Resources Board has broad powers... they have banned the sale of premixed low temperature windshield washer fluid to spare the air in most of the State.

Gas Water Heaters, Furnaces all must be NOx compliant...

I get all those great ads for Honda Generators and Stihl Chainsaws and in the fine print it often states not for sale in California.

Maybe nothing will come of this... it could just be the California car culture is going the way of the Dinosaur...

I spent all of my school years in the SF Bay Area and we never had indoor recess... thing to remember is California is a very large State and what is needed in Los Angeles is not the same as Humboldt... yet... for the most part we have a one size fits all.

Alabama has never required one. We are lucky to get everyone on the road with a drivers license and a license plate.

Unlicensed Drivers are a big problem and part of the reason "Undocumented" drivers are now issued driver's licenses... over 660,000 last I heard.

Hope they all have insurance.

Stealing tags is big here... I have several taken in the work parking lot... don't have money to buy tags or pay for insurance or can't pass smog... no problem... lift a tag and claim it as your own.

Come to think of it around Y2k there were such severe forest fires that NorCal had similar restrictions for a few days. I recall my kids weren't let out for PE then their soccer coach insisted on outdoor practice that evening anyway - but nobody showed up. I took a couple of photos where visibility was only a few blocks.

In WA, testing in only the 5 counties with air quality problems, and only cars 25 years or newer, and no testing of cars newer than 2008.

In Indiana they only require emission testing every two years in Lake and Porter counties, up in the northwest corner of the state, right next to Chicago. And it applies only to cars manufactured after 1976, as your do. Read below. Rest of the state is exempt.

INDIANA'S VEHICLE EMISSIONS TESTING PROGRAM
Vehicles registered in Lake and Porter counties are required to undergo emissions tests and tampering inspections every two years if they were manufactured after 1976 and have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 9,000 pounds or less. Vehicle manufacturers typically print the GVWR on the driver-side door jamb.

Vehicles manufactured in odd-numbered years are tested during odd-numbered years and vehicles manufactured in even-numbered years tested during even-numbered years. Exemptions include vehicles manufactured during the four latest model years and antique vehicles (as defined by 326 IAC 13-1.1-1 - see Section 1 on page 2). For instance, a vehicle with a manufacturer's model year of 2009 should be tested in 2013, and tested again in 2015 and 2017.
