To get rid of rats you need to try and eliminate all of their food sources... except the poison your putting out... I also like those glue boards you can put them around the perimeter of your building but if you have an infestation that could get expensive.

I like Ed's idea though.. Ed How much oil about half full?.. guessing that keeps them from just jumping back out of the bucket.

You only need enough to keep the rats from jumping back out. 4 in would be plenty. Ed

5 gal bucket with burnt motor oil in the bottom and a metal rod with a can on it like a roller on it with peanut butter on the can. Will work for mice and rats. Some use water but it will freeze, motor oil won't. Ed

I add wwf to water. Removal of rats from bucket of oil can be messy

Same concept works for chipmunks too.
A couple gallons of antifreeze embalmes those captives almost immediately and should you not get around to checking the trap they don't stink and the system doesn't freeze.

Remove the food source to get rid of the rats. All the other devices mentioned will catch them. For infestation, the 5 gallon trap with water /antifreeze will catch multiple rats and no reset needed like with conventional traps. Most items needed to build one are readily available at most homes.

I had a corn crib that got a bad case of the rats. Very bad. I would go out every evening with the BB gun and the pointer we had would go with me. All I had to do was knock the rat down and the pointer would crunch it and spit it out looking for the next one. I killed as many as 30 rats in an evening. Almost wish I had a corn crib with a bunch of rats, because that was some serious fun. Would only be out there for 10 or 15 min and the action was pretty fast. Maybe it will become a new sport. "Yes I turned pro on the rat hunting circuit three years ago ...... With all the backing from my sponsors I make .... " Yes I know I have a strange sense of humor but I enjoy it. Ed

Skunk smell. Skunks raid rat nests and eat little rats. My neighbor had rats in his hog barn - bad - so that when you walked in in broad daylight youd see rats runnin round. A skunk got in the barn one night and sprayed. After that the rats left. Down south they used to catch a black snake and put it under the corn crib and the rats would just move out directly.
