Kubota U45 excavator
I have a non turbo V2203 IDI in my kubota u45. It is blowing a lot of black smoke and has very little power. I have all new air and fuel filters. There is no blockage in the intake. The head is new
and valves adjusted properly. My compression cold test is 380psi in 3 cyl and one cyl is 340. Starts fairly easily and runs excellent. Almost no smoke when idiling or at any speed untill you start to
operate the machine. Then she rolls coal like a freight train. I have adjusted the fuel screw on front of govenor and it made a small improvement. I pulled the glow plugs looking for signs of a
bad injector and they all look the same. not wet, just even black.

im at a loss.

any ideas?

Thanks

Hi. Welcome.

I would look at the fuel injectors dirty or not closing completely dumping extra fuel into the cylinder.
How many hours on the machine?

It sounds like the engine starts and revs normally unless it's under load, right? Have you confirmed it's actually an engine issue and not drivetrain or hydraulics related? For example, is there any chance of the 3 point control being misadjusted so it's throwing the hydraulics into bypass? Do the backhoe and FEL work normally? Does tractor coast freely if you drop the clutch?

Did the problem begin with the head replacement?

Long story but I just put this motor back in when I found out it was only the head gasket. The previous motor burned up. So.... this is the original engine
to this machine that was blowing white smoke and pushing water out of the radiator cap because of the head gasket. I had thought the new head cracked again and gave up on it being an IDI head known for cracking. I put in a used engine that lasted exactly 1 yr. out of desperation I started taking this original engine apart and found that just the head gasket was bad.. waisted $3k over a head gasket.

So this original engine has all new gaskets and seals, the new head with maybe 200hrs on it. Since I put it in, the smoking has gotten progressively worse
and the power as well.

this engine has around 4k hrs.

I did find that one injector is bad. I cracked the line loose and the ticking stopped. The machine was movable but smoked insanely and low power. This
is a mini excavator. I tried cleaning the injector with no luck. Now it runs fine but cannot even move the machine more than a foot at a time. I am selling machine and of course this happens the day before the guy shows up to pick up the machine,

Amazingly he still wanted the machine and I deducted the cost of all 4 injectors for him. Hope this works. I feel terrible.

Sorry I missed that it's not a tractor. Sounds like a bad situation that got worse. Hope you didn't get hosed too badly on the deal.

I was asking 15k and he gave me 12k witch was all i was expecting to get anyhow. Cant believe he even gave me that much! He wanted a Kubota and even if the engine is shot ( I dont think it is) I gave him the other engine anyhow to rebuild. This machine digs circles around the Case CX50B that i replaced it with. I needed a machine with a cab and heat because we dig year round. Both machines are 10k lbs and i swear the case has half the digging power and much slower cycling speed. I spent 30k on the case and it is costing me time on the job. It may be sent down the
road too. Everyone says the newer machines dont have the digging power of the older ones and it is true so far. So what the **** to I replace the case with??? And not for nothing its an 07, not like it is that new. I did try a 2012 Cat 304 that is a little smaller but way under powered for what i need. I love this case but dam i will have to freakin charge more to do the same job.

I can say from fooling around with my Kubota that the fuel adjustment can be sensitive when trying to get more power. I would back it in toward the pump housing until you don't get any smoke then try loading the engine. These engines are quite choked up air wise and need the help of forced induction to make any power.

If you knew what the factory setting was on the fuel I would start there. On my machine I was trying to make more power and just 1 turn of fuel more than factory would make the smoke roll out of her pretty badly. I soon realized it was far too much fuel without anymore air.

Another question I would pose to you is do you think the hydraulics could be deadheading or something else really loading the engine that you might not realize?

I have a 2004 Volvo EX35 excavator and can't say enough good about it for a 10,000 lb. machine. With the exception of 2 bad computers this machine starts in the cold and runs well, digs things I never thought possible.

Good luck, Fred

I would check with case and see if they have a high flow pump as a option. Then check all relief pressures.

Thanks Fred,

I this engine sat for a year in my garage before i recently reinstalled it. I recently backed the fuel screw all the way out because it would take a long time to start if it sat for a while. It seemed to help before but this time it did nothing. Im wondering if it was stuck and freed itself up now killing my power and adding to the ridiculas smoking. I will let the guy that bought it know to run the screw back in. He is going to replace all the injectors anyhow. I am pretty confident that the hydraulics are fine. Not positive but you cant even lift the blade gently without
bogging and rollin coal. LOL my shop has a black hew all over now. Now if i was 18 again I might think it was cool. instead .... im bitter.....lol

i actually was just thinking of having them look it over just in case there is something wrong. only problem is finding the down time.
