Simple. The subsidy is from the government, not the utility
Wrong I think that is what B and D has been saying, is that through the rate structure the utilities are being forced to "subsidies green power"

So in your system that runs on pixy dust at night the meters are free and there is no pensions for the workers maintaining the solar grid and the solar panels never break down and don't need to be maintained.

Your comprehension of the post and your subsequent nomenclature would both seem to be lacking in factuality.

The green power is subsidized by Hydro One increasing the spread between the wholesale grid rate and retail in order to pay green power extra . This the rate payers are on the hook for that.
Then again the rate payers are also tax payers and were robbed 30 billion paid to wind corporations to build and install turbines .

Any power source and system has it's own technical characteristics - pros, cons, and maintenance requirements.

The subsidy discussion mostly revolves around competition. Traditional utilities were often heavily subsidized themselves, and would prefer to keep that cash flow, and the entire market for that matter, to themselves.

There are aspects of distributed power generation being added to the grid that I like. That said, if my long term plans play out, I will retire off-grid. 100% of those financial and maintenance responsibilities will be mine.

Thanks 3930dave.

You're welcome.

If you are going to read that whole section of the AG's report, I hope you have a strong stomach.

3930dave, That is a damning report of the management of the power generation and supply for Ontario. It is true that a great deal of the cost to the consumer is because of the extreme prices paid to renewable generators of power, but that does not mean that renewable sources are to blame. The people who were responsible for increasing the generating capacity at a time when it was not needed are the sole fault.

There is no connection between the cause of the problem and the use of solar and wind power. If those in charge are stupid enough to contract to buy power they do not need (and have to re-sell at several times less than cost) then the consumer has to suffer. Perhaps those in charge should be made to suffer, but from the list of salaries, it appears they are not.

You could probably base several post-graduate courses solely around how our provincial utility has been mis-managed. Every customer in the province has an extra "Debt Retirement" charge added to their bill, to pay for shenanigans predating what we are discussing here. Blaming renewable energy is just skimming the surface, the rot goes way deeper than that.

Yes, the rainmakers running the show pretty much have total control, coupled with zero accountability. It's a great gig, if you can get it.

I pay more attention than most (well, up to the limits of what my BP will take ), but even I've started losing track of how many $1B+ scandals have played out here.....

Even if I didn't have a technical interest (I do) in going off-grid, the nonsense we've been discussing would be enough to cause me to consider off-grid for a retirement home here.
