Suffolk County MA has a holiday today for Evacuation Day: the day the British pulled out of Boston (after setting Boston Light on fire). They did so conveniently on 3/17/1776.

This Sunday there is a parade in South Boston, which attracts 500,000 to 1,000,000 viewers. The weather has been 50-60's for the last week or so, so of course the day of the parade the expected temps are below freezing, with rain or snow forecast later in the afternoon.

The 11-month siege of Boston ended when the Continental Army, under the command of George Washington, fortified Dorchester Heights in early March (March 4-5) 1776 with cannons captured at Ticonderoga.

British General William Howe, whose garrison and navy were threatened by these positions, was forced to decide between attack and retreat. To prevent what could have been a repeat of the Battle of Bunker Hill, Howe decided to retreat, withdrawing from Boston to Nova Scotia on March 17, 1776.

The British evacuation was Washington's first victory of the war. It was also a huge morale boost for the Thirteen Colonies, as the city where the rebellion began was the first to be liberated.
After seeing Dorchester Heights fortified with cannons, Howe wrote, "My God, these fellows have done more work in one night than I could make my army do in three months." He was wrong, though: it actually took the Americans two nights.....

Would you all believe that I'm "Mike" and my wife is "Pat"...may she RIP. Our people arrived in mid-Missouri in the early 1800's long before the Civil War........all from Ireland.....except for a couple Germans mixed in there. I ain't got time to parade however, still planting potatoes etc today, .....don't want that famine to catch me off guard.:D
