I've been wearing ear buds under a simple earphone style hearing protector while mowing for long periods. I find I'm turning the music up so much to over the noise of the tractor that I'm probably damaging my ears as much with the music as I am the tractor noise.

Has anyone tried noise cancelling earphones for this application. I've tried them in the tech department stores and they seem to work over the noisy store environment. Not sure if they would work over tractor noise of hold up to sweat and abuse. They are very expensive.

Anyone tried it?

What about a good set on ear muffs. When I did supermarket ref. that's what I used and will probably hold up better. Rack Refrigeration can be quite loud between 500 and 1000 hp in compressor depending on store size and I just used muffs, $50 probably get a pair that will serve you well.

Very pleased with these simple Blue tooth sound protectors: 3M WorkTunes Wireless Hearing Protector with Bluetooth Technology - - Amazon.com

I too used earbuds under regular muffs and that really sucked, especially when I yanked the cord out of the earbuds when jumping off the tractor. These ones here have wireless blue tooth that works well, and to be honest I just listen to the radio most of the time... They are not noise cancelling per se, and they do not have booming "Beats" audio sound quality, but they do eliminate most of the brush hog noise and I can hear the music perfectly fine while not hurting my ears. They are only $80 whereas the higher dollar noise cancelling units are a couple/few hundred. I think they limited the sound output to ensure that you could not damage your hearing with the audio output. It's plenty loud for me, but some reviewers whished it had more volume. I plan on running over these with my back tires someday and did not want to feel really bad when I do that...

When mowing, I generally put in ear plugs, then put cheap headphones over them (they don't enclose around my ears). I can hear my music well enough without damaging my ears, but my iPod is turned all the way up and it's still not ideal for clarity, but good enough to jam to and help pass the time.

I used to have a nice pair of Koss headphones that encompassed the ears completely. I wish I still had them, because I'd put them on without ear plugs first and they'd cancel enough outside noise that I wouldn't have to blast the iPod to jam while mowing.

That's what I meant by 'earphones'. I'm using what I wear when shooting.

You sound like me, if I don't like it I'll smash it!

I have the wired Worktunes and they do fine without having to turn the volume up too high. If you go with the noise cancelling, be prepared to spend enough to get the higher end ones. I've had a couple of pairs of moderately priced noise cancelling head phones (under $100) and they work fine on airplanes but are useless anywhere else. Apparently the cheaper ones are tuned to airplane noise but not other things.

I looked into some high quality fitted noise cancelling ear buds for motorcycling. The custom fit ones started at $300 per ear and went up from there!!! For tractor work, I'd be looking at some noise cancelling ear muffs with speakers. The ones Snowback covered above look interesting.
