Buying Advice New Machine - Too Much Rust?????

/ New Machine - Too Much Rust????? #11
That is kinda what I was asking - is this normal for six month's outside storage? Or is it indications of something else? I'm on the Big Island of Hawaii, and the main port is Honolulu on Oahu. I don't know for sure, but a lot of the "stuff" that comes from Honolulu is on open barges. I was worried this might have come that way and had a wet and rough trip. And perhaps it just wasn't rinsed with fresh water upon it's arrival.

But I have no way of knowing - hence - my question - is this a normal condition for six months in rainy weather, outside near the coast???

Galvanized fittings do not get to that level of rust in 6 months without help. You can just imagine where this will all lead to in 10-15 years.

Buy it and take it home and spray the rusty area's with WD 40.

I am not a fan of WD 40 for much more than flushing a sticky lock. It is the only reason I have some.
WD 40 will not help the long term looks and problems this tractor has and will have.

Still with sixdogs on this one. Order a new one, clean it when it arrives, Enjoy it for many years.

 exactly. Let the dealer know about your worries and see what "dealer intstalled" options you can get out of him, like an extra pair of rear remotes and/or a 3rd function valve on the loader. You can get a lot of "bang for the buck" with these items. His costs are low and these are expensive options to the consumer. The $800 off costs him $800, while $1000+ in options might only cost him a little shop labor and dealer cost of the option.
Spray those area's down and don't loose a minute's sleep over it. The hyd. "block" is not going to rust through and a few hose ends that didn't get the best coating at the fitting factory will not fail due to rust.

I don't think the dealer will move a bit. It is his last model and until he has a few shiny new ones to make the older unit look bad . The dealer has no reason to move on price or options.
Just my thought.

New one probably going to look somewhat similar over time.

I wouldn't worry on the rust on the ball ends, those will clean up. Hyd valve and hoses more concerning, but they might clean up just fine.

Bought a tractor that sat on the lot for a year, was some fading on plastic and a few minor scratches, but price was right....

I'd go with the pre-rusted unit, unless you'd feel better watching a new one do the same thing.

Smoke, fire extinguishers, and salt spray are all highly corrosive and damaging to any electrical or electronic wires, contacts, and switches. In my business any client getting thir equipment expsed to these three items replaces those items because even if they work tempirarily . . . they will fail.

An occasional salt spray hat gets hosed off is one thing . . but that is not what your pictures indicate. In my tractor search early last year I came across a unit like the one I eventually chose. But that first unit I saw was rusty in many places even though it was at a dealer where it had no ocean exposure. But it had been on a lot right next to a highway and must have gotten frequent salt spray from vehicles going past in winter. I would not have bought that unit for a 30% discount because the amount of repairs would endup being huge (plus ser warranty for electrical and switch limitations on coverage).

Tractors today are improved in convenience and performance over those of 25 years ago because they are made of different materials and technology. A tractor 25 years ago coukd handle wide spread rust much easier than today's units.

I'd find another product that us not already "substantially used" in its brand new state.

Lets recognize an important detail . . salt spray is one thing . . but the unit you pictured has been in an ongoing salt bath and that is a hugely different scenario.

I would negotiate a larger discount and plan to replace the HYD QDs. A little bit of rust in the sleeves of the QDs will freeze them up. We have rusting problems here in the PAC NW and that is the first thing to seize up when forced like I am to store outside. Keep all moving parts lubricated and disconnect often for prevention. Remember a little rust always looks worse to the buyer than the seller.

And my point is . . if chrome can be compromised . . imagine how wires and switches and contacts which purposely don't have environmental protection in order to properly conduct . . get compromised.

And then there are bearings and pulleys and fasteners. Salt in its many forms is such a destructive force . . but when it is fogged and misted and blown into everything . . it comes at you both directly and indirectly in ways typically not recognized or considered too.
