Well done Adiredneck! Your 'adventure' has caused me to check this forum everyday for an update on your progress. While I will genuinely miss this thread, I'm sure you will not

Stay tuned... This winter I am tearing down the rearend on my L3400. Dealer says the howl is completely normal when you engage the brakes, but I call BS. It might be considered "chatter" from what I have read.

I will not be using a Dewalt drill on that project in case anyone is wondering....

If it would make you feel better I can loan you a Milwaukee drill... I have appreciated your sense of humor through out all of this. I don't think I could be quite so gracious. I also like the fact that you say that your wife has been real supportive through all of this. That says a lot for your wife and your relationship.

I put two hours on the engine and I am happy to report that all is well.

I stopped by the dealer and had them print out all of my invoices.

Wsm. $137.00
Piston. $168.41
Two sets of rings. $84.20x2= 168.40
Crank bearings. 4 @ $27.71= 110.84
Rod bearings 4 @ $18.80 = 75.20
Front main bearing $ 46.81 (one piece bearing that I had the machine shop install)
Upper gasket set. $126.28
Lower gasket set. $ 159.03
Driveshaft output seal. $ $5.30
Kubota gray paint 2@$12.80 = $25.60
O-ring for hydraulic pump. $ .70
Transmission input shaft seal. $ 11.10
Input shaft seal gasket. $ 5.36
Machine shop cost: $ 420.00
Wix oil filter$ $8.20
Wix fuel filter $ 12.65
Shell Rotella 15w-40: 3@18.00= $54.00

Grand total: $1534.88.

I did purchase a few tools, like a 3/4" socket set, 3 jaw puller set (didn't use any of them). There were also the bolts that I had to purchase because I stretched the original ones, plus the 2nd rear main seal that we messed up.

All in all, not bad!

For some reason, when I own something, it seems like I have to work on it, but a knuckle or two, cuss at it, then it feels like its mine. You can without a doubt say you OWN this tractor. Congrats on getting it fixed and going again.

I checked again last night and I see another oil drip forming on the clutch drain. Not pleased. I am trying not to get too worked up about it. I still have a hunch that the front axle pinion seal is the culprit and that the oil is running down the driveshaft cover into the clutch housing.

Last year, I had oil dripping from the driveshaft cover and in the clutch housing. I monitored all oil regularly, and the only place I lost oil/fluid was in the front axle. It was regularly 2+ quarts low. I never saw oil drip anywhere on the axle seals. Just on the outside of the driveshaft and in the clutch housing.

Whenever I would check it, the fill plug would hiss as if it had built up a few pounds of pressure. Fingers crossed that this is my problem. My first order of business is to take the plug out, and drill & tap for 1/8" NPT. I'll put a 90deg hose barb and vent up into the engine compartment to see if that helps.

I had a hard time not making a comment when I wrote that! If you notice, I wrote "take the plug out and drill & tap". Just think, if I had only removed the frost plug BEFORE I drilled through it, how much easier my project would have been!
