I've been thinking about this too a really bad accident. But why should pants matter. Why get close enough to the PTO it can grab you.

My feeling is he didn't think anything could/would happen out of his control. Not to make excuses but he owns a computer business and spent his whole working life in an office. Those of us who have been out around tools and equipment have learned over the years what and when to avoid. Just a guess on my part.:confused3:

Many old Farmalls- internationals were set up so that you stepped on the hitch right beside the PTO to get up on the tractor. This might be the case. Ed

Yes, mine had a short, light weight chain to hold it from turning. However, even if it is turning, if it's in good condition, you could grab that shield with your hand and stop it from turning. I've done that, but don't recommend it.

No one ever told me what that chain was for. Now I know. Thank you!

Many of the Metal PTO shields have a small hole in them to clip the tractor end of the chain into this hole.

Yes, mine does. I didn't know why those were there either, until now. :D

It is amazing the stuff you can learn on TBN isn't it? I know I have learned a lot here.

The shaft doesn't touch the shield except for the nylon bearings on each end. They have grease nipples as well, although I think they are often overlooked and not greased.

My grandfather years ago had his overalls torn from him from a PTO shaft on a baler. My new Workmaster 50 has a safety cut off if you try to dismount with the PTO engaged. I have always made it a habit of not dismounting any tractor unless I turn the PTO off. I do dismount with it freewheeling but always stay away and typically wait for 30 seconds or so. Most of those PTO shaft safety tubes break the chain that holds them and that in itself is a safety hazard, and it is a pain in the rear when trying to grease the universal on the shaft, but it is a necessary requirement for PTO equipment.
