If any of y'all plant oats in the fall, when do you start discing? The reason I ask is because I was planning on discing in September but have a week off next week. Thought about lightly discing then and then maybe going over it again in a month. It's only ten acres and right now mostly goatweed and ragweed so the cows don't go over there much. Should I wait a month and do it on a weekend or proceed now?
I think I would do it two weeks before planting, then again just before planting. I think right now, the disced under weeds would have around a month to regroup and grow. But since you have a week off......................knock your socks off. I love discing.

Since it is so hot and dry, I'd disc now, then again prior to planting, whatever seed is there, is there. Disc now would kill a lot of the foliage and make it easier when you do plant. That is what I do, in fact just shredded my small area 2 day's ago as low as I could, so it could start breaking down.

Depending on weather (rain mostly), I try to have my plots in by the 2nd week of Sept, but have been forced to wait until the 1st weekend of Oct due to out of town work.

Ford Sill, Lawton Ok, 1987, late July, it was averaging 108 everyday on the rifle range. You learned real quick to keep your black M16 in the shadow of your body. They made us take off our t-shirts and dip them in a trash can filled with ice water, then put them back on....wow what a wake up! Then, around 6 pm every evening, we got the tornado sirens going off. You could almost set your watch to them daily.

No fair, that's cheating. Be sure to fill your pockets with cool air and bring it back.
I remember the coldest day of my life was in Ft. Still. It was in February of 89. I remember that was my first time ever drinking coffee and enjoying it.

I believe you about the cold. there ain't much of nothing between Ft. Sill and the North pole to block the north wind, and you got the rockies to the west to help "funnel" it down.

IIRC, we stopped for a short break on a long march at a grave site that may have been Geronimo's grave....or some famous Indians.

Bird, how have you been doing? I hope you are better.

I was in Houston, we had 6 degree highs and 4 degree lows for four days. It broke all the pumping in Houston, just before Christmas that year. Trees that were over 500 years old were killed. HS.

I used to live in Marlow, OK, about 35 miles from Ft. Sill, but that was a long time ago, left there in early summer, 1956. I remember really enjoying some cold weather once when I was in the Boy Scouts. We had some snow and icy streets and the local lumber yard made a sled for our scout master and he towed it around on city streets behind his car with 3 of us on it at a time. It was great, on some turns it would sling us off the sled. Can you imagine anyone doing something like that now? But the last time I was at Ft. Sill was in 1967 when I was a recruiting officer for the Dallas Police Department.

The hottest days of the years have past, I hope. The entire time we have been hitting over 100 degrees, I have been home after having foot surgery. Good timing for sure! Anyway, my Daughter is here taking care of me and brought me this photo of my Pumpkin Doodle.
