I don't know how true it is but I've heard stories that way back when before the blight you could go through the woods and pick up enough chestnuts to live off of through a winter if you didn't have enough food. Does any one know we're you can get the blight resistant saplings to plant?

Here's a pic of a hickory log I pulled out for firewood, got to test the winch and tractor on this one . Pulled it very well although I had to adjust the winch clutch before I went in the wooods today it was set way to loose from the factory and I had to pull the rope what felt like 3 ft for it to engage and then it wanted to slip with a heavy load, I gave the adjusting bolts a 1/4 turn and made a world of difference in pulling strength and engagement

Very glad to see the firewood wood season has started again with the posting of new pictures.
I have been doing some TSI work cutting junk like these two that have been left behind by others because there was no money in them.

Nope. I've read they are crossing them with a Chinese strain of trees, but I don't want to try them.

About 25 years ago we went to the Smoky Mountains and were kind of amazed at how chestnut was used in the cabins and barns. There were still huge chestnut stumps in the woods that were cut well over 150 years ago. Must have been something to see.

Timber Stand Improvement. Any work that improves a stands health or value or aesthetic appearance or moves it towards what ever goal you have that you consider improved. Thus a general term to use that sounds impressive when all you really want to do is to be in the woods.

I would suggest going through the American Chestnut Foundation to track down sources (eg. The American Chestnut Foundation - Seeds and Seedlings).

The SUNY trees aren't available yet. Here is what Dr. Powell told me when I contacted him last spring about availability of his trees: "We plan to start with the U.S. regulatory agencies, but will likely quickly follow with the Canadian agencies. But this is not a quick process. Our estimate is that it will take 3 to 5 years before we can get approval to make the trees available to the public."
