Relocated the stock wiper/work lamp control up on the pillar, and added room for 5 ARB/Carling Jeep type rocker switches. Top switch turns on the dome lamp [ lazy, don't have to lean forward/reach up to turn on ] which now contain a bright LED COB light. Middle switch turns on both front and rear work lamps. Bottom switch controls the rotary beacon. The wires you see in between are grounds and power for future switches. Have blank covers coming to fill those spots for now. Wired up the switches so the bottom LED's light up when the ignition sw is ON. And each large LED light switch logo is lite when that function is on. Have most of the wiring done, but still need to mount 4 amber 18 watt LED floods which will work with the hazard flashers or turns.... Retain the stock switch assy to control wiper/washer functions.. old F/R work lights switches only turn on/off the little green LED's next to them.... if you feel like it...

Just so you know them there's likely Carling Contura series switches. Jeep don't make no stinkin switches. Got some in my Toyota too but Toyota didn't make them.

Sealed Rocker Switches | carlingtech.com

They've got all kinds of colors and legends avaliable even a few tractor types.

You like all this electrical stuff, you should have done what I use to do for a living.

Nice job adding the new switches. Looks Great!

I've been browsing Ebay for switches, controls, AC units, interior lights, radios and various hardware for when I build my cab. I had planed to put everything in an overhead console but I like side column look too. Some thought was given to using electronic membrane switches similar to your upper panel but they can be expensive and I was afraid they'd wear out too quickly. (The cover panel itself.) Rocker switches are so much more universal and easier to change or update.

I used to get paid to do electrical and electronic work, believe it or not... Been to most of the Digital Equipment Corp schools in Boston and Kalifornia back in my day.. I was in Semi Valley before it was kool........ Again, back in the day..... Sonny.... Put that in your pot and cook it.... [[ :) ]] ' Posed to read ' Jeep TYPE rocker switches... but someone fergot to include that... ... They pay me these days to stay home and try to clean out the two checks they send me each month...... it's TOUGH... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The stock switches look like membrane, but they are just printed circuit board mounted switches that you push down on via the ' membrane ' looking plastic cover.... As often as I probably will use the wipers, they will last a long time. Did not like having to turn on both the front and rear work lights each time I started the tractor. I leave the four 27 watt LED work lamps on my 5035 lite up all the time. Helps leaving and returning to the barn, and makes me more visible when out and about... So I will be leaving the ones on the 2555 lite all the time, too...

Sonny? You must be ancient because I'm already long in the tooth. LOL
I started with tubes or rather Fleming valves. I think that was before Digital Equipment even came about. I remember DEC but DEC is dead now, Compaq bought them and Compaq may even be dead now too.

Oh yeah I remember core memory. How's that for old. I've seen and used 8" floppy disks and that well well along in my electronic career. It stored a whoppin 80K. I've done my share of paper tape too. Of course before all the new fangled digital stuff became all the rage it was all analog, point to point hand wiring and mostly about radio stuff. Started there and ended up with cameras built entirely on a silicon fab line that measured about 2.5mm cubed finished, including lens. It was a long and wild ride.

The resistive ink on those membrane things usually doesn't last very long. You can fix them by replacing the ink but I'm with you, mechanical switches are likely a better choice.

I started out wiring control panels for IBM 407 tabulators, collators, in 1965. Graduated to 1401 programming in SPS and Autocoder. I ran card sorters sorting over 10,000 cards 20 column at a time. In the Army we had 1401's with 1405 RAMAC drives. Advanced to the 1410, 360 and 370 systems and DEC systems running paper tape.

I sold TRS 80 computers for several years, starting with the Model 1. The first harddrive I had was 5 meg. Cost me $799. It wouldn't be capable of storing one cell phone pic nowadays.

I bought a bunch of such rocker (centura) type switches from China off E-Bay this summer. There are hundreds to choose from, weatherproof, Illuminated and so forth. Took a while to get them but a lot cheaper then getting them from the US.

My computer history more or less but not totally inclusive or up to date by any stretch.
1st
xb93.jpg
Then came these
Slide_rule_scales_back.jpg still got a couple around somewhere.
then this
HP65_2.jpg I thought I'd died and gone to heaven after having to use these things.
MonroeLN160X_1.jpg
then there was this thing for a bit altair8800.jpg it was pure torture to load.
Then one of these art01fig02.jpg
Yeah my finger still remember some of the contorted wordstar commands. Cntl KB, cntl KV etc.
The rest has been the PC litany form the first days. . I've designed logic analyzers around PCs, those had 256K ram with all the programming done in assembly code and some other pretty fancy test equipment too. People would ***** because their workers would be caught playing games on the equipment. LOL I used to think that 1 gig hard drives were the ultimate but now we're into terabytes and still going strong for hard drives. Heck little cheapie thumb drives have way more capacity that a gig on a chip now. Bubble memory anyone? Now there was a flash in the pan.

try programming on of these using DIP switches only. The DEC PDP8:

My first RS Color Computer had 4k ram.

My first Sinclair had 1k ram.

Sorry OP. You opened a can of old worms for us old pharts.

I used to love the smell of the oil on the paper tape, used to load programs onto some early micro.

Or pornography printed on an ASR 33 or LA 36 Decwriter.

The best part of the **** on the TTY's was that you got to look at it for the whole time it was going chunk-chunk-chunk and try to figure out what it was going to turn out to be...

I used to have an ASR 33 with acoustic modem on a time share account. The neighbors kid used to come over and play hours of Star Trek, paying me for the computer time. The people in the apartment below must have wondered.

I liked the way you had to manually key in the boot program on the PDP-8's so it would load the first paper tape. When you were working on something that was having problems and had to power down, you were constantly manually keying in [ remember, flip the keys real quick to the address, press address load key, flip the keys real quick to enter the data then lift the load key, etc.. holding your little frayed DEC book that contained the little program you had to enter up in upper memory, way up near 7777octal... trying not to do it by memory so you would not mess it up THIS TIME in your haste.. ?? ] the boot program, loading the first tape so the POS could read the program tape in... usually in the middle of the night. Key in the start address, check the program you just keyed in, rekey in the start address, load the boot tape into the teletype reader, press start key... clunk, clunk, clunk.... Teletype reader questionable, boot tape questionable, program tape seen it's better days, rinse and repeat..... About as bad as the first home computers with loading/storing programs on cassette tapes.... It's a wonder I still have hair..... :)

Amazing how turning our calculators upside down to spell "Shell Oil" could make us smile back then.

I don't know what's worse... Typing the same stories over and over again, not remembering that you have posted it before, or being TOO OLD TO CARE... !!!! :)

You young whippersnappers loading yer zeros and ones into your fancy computin' devices. Why, back in my day we had to chisel our bits in stone! And we didn't have no slick zeros and ones -- We had to use O's and I's!
