Here are a few pics of me on the 450 foreman over 10 years ago. It was a beast of a machine... Don't think I'd do this with the Pioneer.
I do that all the time because I have some long STEEP hills. I have to traverse straight downhill at no more than 3-4 miles per hour or she'll get sideways and the partys over along with the SxS.Yeah I hear ya on the engine braking. Do you do the two foot method where you put left foot on brake and keep engine above idle with right foot when descending hills? In low I have pretty good engine braking using this method.
I read on another forum several comments about transmission failures with Honda. Before buying, be sure to google what you can find on it to see if it's a real issue, or not.
It really is a small percent of Pioneer 1000's. The damage was clutches burning up.They have dual clutches and most clutch damage was the one that changed 1st, 3rd, 5th and reverse. I'm not saying it's all driver error but I'm believing if you be sure not to slip the clutch (driving to slow in reverse and 1st), and when towing and driving steeper, slower trails, stay in low range. A lot of these guys stay in high because low range shifts much more and even though it seems annoying its much better on the clutches than staying in high at low speeds.
There was also some complaints about water sucking in the air intake. Honda tried to better it by putting it higher up and to the front but people hit water at high speed and it splashes up in the intake. People driving in lots of water are solving that problem by snorkeling them.
This thing isn't quite Honda bullet proof, but I'm confident if a guy uses a little common sense and understand its design, it will last a long long time. I've taken solo rides many miles up in the high back country and its proven to be very reliable for me.
I am going to wait until next years model to see if they do any upgrades or modifications. I was at a dealer yesterday and really liked the machine.
I am/was interested the Honda Pioneer 500. Seems pricey tho. See there are other brands such as Odes, Hisun etc.. for a lots less money with more attachments included. I am on the fence about purchasing one vs Honda might check them out.
I see you have a 450 foreman. I bought that one in 2002 and kept it for 6 years. I beat the snot out of it and it never gave me a problem. I sold it outright and then purchased a Rubicon which I also loved. More nimble on trails etc. I bought the Ranger in 2012 because I need something a little more comfortable and more useful with the dump box etc. I am enjoying my retirement @ 66 and not the daredevil I was in my mid 50's.. Gotta slow down sometime.
