Thomas, not sure what "rounds" you're referring to. All the wood that's in the crate is to be burned as-is (once seasoned). This is just alder: burns fairly quickly.

Rob, my crates can handle something like 1,500 pounds, readily stack, and they won't rot. But, yeah, whatever works for ya! ;)

I found wire basket pallets nearby... they are new and $160 each... hold about a 1/4 of a cord.

If you would like to get them for around $100 ea pm me. Of course, this only applies to folks on the Left Coast: West Coast port within reasonable distance.

Some folks down around Tacoma who sell warehouse stuff once had these, used, for $100. I kind of kick myself for not buying them years ago. I hadn't really defined my needs real well back then. $60 more can add up if you're buying several of them: I bought 50; that $60 more would have lumped on another $3k!

Also, note that my references are to collapsible crates. If you have wood in them all the time then the "collapsing" part doesn't really get you much; but, for transporting it's pretty much essential.

I won't live long enough to see mine rot, they have PT touching the ground and even my oldest ones, years old, aren't showing any rot. They are designed to have air flow through them, and that keeps them dry...

They are easier to load and unload, are stackable and I can put green splits right into them, AND with the good air flow the splits dry nicely right in place.

Like I already mentioned, I have some wire baskets, that's what led me to design/build my own firewood boxes...

Around here...outfits that sell stone have lots of pallets that have wire cages attached...they are great for hauling cord wood etc...if they can't give them away they strip the wire cages (HD) for scrap and burn the pallets...

I was thinking my brother could use a few... location is SF Bay Area so I would imagine cost/logistics would be a problem being 800 miles away...

When I go back and forth it is usually with the Corolla... which would be too small.

 No, not from ME. Buy from the manufacturer and ship to a port there at SF: shipping was to LA, then to SF, then to SEA (for me). I'd think that it would be cheaper for you to land them in SF.

Again, if you want details on how to do this give me a holler. It's not bad if you know how the process works.
