love it when city types move out here and insist they hear fisher cats or cougars at night. They look at me like i'm an idiot when I say they're just foxes until they get a sound byte off the internet. Also usually takes them 6 months or so to stop calling the police every time they see a black bear passing through.

NJ is the most densely populated state in the nation (over 1,200 / square mile) so I suspect the Bears are used to them. "Yo, bear - fuggedaboughtit."

That said, people are always surprised to learn that there are parts of NJ that are rural. The 2010 census says it's about 467,000, or about 5% of the population.

When I lived in northern New England, there was a saying that "After three days, fish and relatives smell about the same".

When you wait all year for not that many weeks of summer free of cold and/or blackflies, a long visit from a city relative looking to be entertained wasn't a happy time.

We have a similar saying about staying with relatives, "after 3 days the fish goes off" so when visiting we never stay more than 3 days. The relatives know about it and do it themselves when they visit.

I live in a civilized pocket of NJ that still has some dirt roads and locals suspicious of outsiders and the government-- yet only 20 min to a half hour or so from city areas. Bears have trouble recognizing rural and city/suburban borders and tend to get themselves in trouble.

I was in the Newark area a few years ago ('09, maybe?) working on a pipe organ in Scotch Plains. As we were driving through the metro area, I asked the local tech, "How exactly did New Jersey arrive at the motto Garden State?" He laughed and said, "Newark is the a--hole of the state. Once you get out of the city, it's actually quite a beautiful area." I never did get out of the Newark area (in fact, got stranded there for an extra day by a flight cancellation), but that city reminded me of East St. Louis, Illinois ... with an airport.

Pretty smart woman she is, with a Ph.D, which is strange since she is marrying into the family. :confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing:

She is marrying into a family with DEEP roots in a very rural part of NC...

She is from NJ! :shocked::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Now, she does make it a point to say she is from South New Jersey but we still like to kid her about her talking funny. :laughing::laughing::laughing: Now, to be fair, she really does not talk funny since she has a very "normal" accent. The same can NOT be said about the accent of many of the family members in which she is about to marry into.

She is a lot of fun, smart, down to earth, pretty and is very welcomed into the family. Now, the guy she is marrying is a good man all around and a good catch. However, I do think he is getting the better part of the deal. :laughing::laughing::laughing: Even if she is from South New Jersey.

Visit Detroit sometime and Newark will seems like the Garden of Eden by comparison. As far as I'm concerned all cities suck no matter where they are, here Europe, Asia, South America etc.

Try Alaska. I was there for 18 months (1955/56) Short summer, long winter, lots of flys mosquitoes, etc. etc. I broke out laughing at the TV show "Buying Alaska". Broker was showing a house in the country. "And it even has its own pond"...That is about the last thing a person wants up there.
