What fuel mileage do you get in your 3/4 or 1 ton diesel? Which brand is best?

I'm a very conservative driver. Slow, and watch miles ahead in case I need to stop. Only brake hard when people are on my bumper! I don't remember what mileage my 08 Duramax gets but it was the same (in that stupid Canadian litres/100km thing) as that new 2016 rental Dodge 1/2 ton hemi that I just had. I drove it conservatively, mostly rural highway, unloaded. Not something I would buy!

Plus, I was surprised. I just had to try it once! That hemi did not have the performance I would have expected. I think my (stock) 6.6 might be a tad faster off the line.

The Dodge had a nicer ride, except the freaky steering. So I am guessing the 3/4 ton hemi is even worse for mileage.

Did not buy the truck to get 40 mpg,s. Its better than 12 mpg you were getting with the 5.9 motor.Thank god 87 octane gas is only $2.24 gallon.Laffin..
It would be nice today if the car company's built a truck that gets 24 32mpgs that a 4x4 I know they have the technology today.

My 2012 Ram 2500, 6.7 Cummins, auto, 4.10 axle ratio, gets 13.5 mpg around town, around 16 mpg hwy unloaded and 10-11mpg towing our 11000# 5th wheel.

Pretty close here on my 2012 Ram 2500 Cummins auto - I run 34" tires and get about 12-13 locally and 15/16 on the highway. Pulling a 7000lbs MiniEx, on a 2500lbs duel axle trailer through the I68 Maryland mountains I got 10-11mpg.

2007 6.0 power stroke. 19, highway. 16 in town. 12 towing around 8k.
2015 6.7 powerstroke. 17 highway. 13 in town. 9.5 towing around 15k.

The 2015 has the egr, scr, and dpf removed. It has a custom tune to handle towing at 10k ft above sea level. The 6.0 is stock mechanically, but a custom tune to again tow up at 10k feet.

If I were buying new, I wouldn't get a diesel unless I absolutely had to have one for some reason. The emissions systems really hurt mileage and repairs on the emissions and turbos are expensive. If you're going to keep it for 10 - 15 years, you will eventually be repairing or replacing both systems.

I have an '20 F250 with the 7.3. It's 4x4, got a 2" lift and brush guard and I don't drive slow. I get 15 - 16 on the highway empty, 9 - 14 towing, depending on the load. When I tow a trailer full of hog traps, mileage is about 9, when I tow the tractor mileage is closer to 14 (despite the fact that the tractor weighs 3x what a load of traps does, they have TREMENDOUS wind resistance).

If the F150 suits you now, I'm sure a new gas F150 will get the job done as well.

What year is your F150 and how often do you really tow those weights? I ask because my 2016 (Lariat, FX4, 3.55s) with the 3.5 EB handles 7,300lbs just fine (with WD hitch) and I wouldn't hesitate to throw the 10,000 it's rated for behind it every now and then. I get 18-20mpg driving back and forth to work (just driving not babying it) and about 9-16 towing depending on which trailer and load. And people can bash on the EB all they want for perceived problems down the road but I just don't see any new truck making it 10-15yrs without some kind of major repair being needed. To much fancy crap on them running on the edge of crazy for emissions reasons (both gas and diesel) that unless you delete all the crap (bye bye warranty) then issues are more than likely going to happen down the road.

The manual was perhaps $2500 cheaper than the automatic. I'd say only buy the manual if you are a die hard manual guy. Resale with likely be very poor unless you want to wait for the few guys that will pay a premium for a manual truck. .[/QUOTE said:
Very good point; thanks. I hadn't thought of resale at all, but it would be harder to find the right buyer too I presume.

In 10-15yrs, you'd be very very lucky to find someone who can even drive a stick.
