What are the reasons for NOT using Cruise Control?

I don't use cruise because of hills and the fact it will try and maintain speed and downshift hard when I am just about to crest it. I just prefer to drive it with my foot and either speed up slightly before the hill or loose just a little speed going up. Or I have just a 5 or 6 miles and I'm slowing down to turn or something. But on the highway I typically use it.

Beats me, I use it on any machine so equipped conditions permit, but cannot convince my wife.

LOL. Same here. Although, my wife has started to use it on long interstate trips.

People in cities get used to simply following the car in front of them much like cows heading to the barn. They dont' pay attention to how fast they are going they just stick to the bumper in front of them.

It drives me crazy as I live in a very rural area and some jerk will come flying up behind me and then proceed to tailgate for the next hour even though there isn't another car around for miles and plenty of places to pass.

I usually just start slowing down and if they won't pass I will just pull to the side of the road. I always give them a clap as they pass to let them know how proud I am that they finally figured out how to pass a car with no traffic around.

I'm one of those "tailgaters" that come up behind those city drivers that drive 5 -15 MPH below the speed limit on 2 lane roads through hills & curves.
I wonder how they can keep up with me once I pass them and drive at 5 MPH OVER the limit trying to get away from them.
I also don't understand why drivers training seems to teach that you can't pass on two lane roads no matter what the speed limit or the speed of the vehicle in front of you.

I'd be surprised if any of you use your cruise control more than, or even as much as, I do. We even have some places here in town with a 30 mph speed limit where I nearly always just use the cruise control. And naturally, I use it on the highway. Heavy traffic and wet or icy pavement are about the only things that keep me from using it.

I once got a speed warning because I went over the limit passing a load of bales on a two lane when I finally had a chance. Followed him while he slowed up the hills, and he speeded going down. So I goosed it and passed him just after a crest where no solid line and no oncoming traffic. Cop said "the law is the law". He said I should stay behind if I couldn't speed. Yeah, whatever. I guess I should also stay in the oncoming lane as long as it takes to pass too??? :mur:

I for one believe a constant flow is far more safe than the surge effect. Sooner or later someone gets distracted and then there is HARD brake lights.

Ahhhhhh,,,,,, the problem is solved!!,,, My new Honda CR-V has auto distance controlling cruise control.
Set it for a couple miles over the speed limit.
THEN, if the guy in front of you slows to three miles per hour below the speed limit, the CR-V slows to maintain the gap.
If he speeds up, the CR-V speeds up.
If you change lanes to an open lane, the CR-V speeds up.

It will maintain down to about 25MPH.

Problem solved!!

I WANT ONE! Followed a moron for 30 miles this mornign. His speed varied from 52 to 59 (limit was 60 but the "flow" is 65). I could see there was no cause to pass as I could see clots of cars ahead. One feels like going 'road rage', stopping the driver, yanking him out and giving him a beating and then politely explain what a CC is for.

Dunno where you are but I am in very hilly country and haven't seen a hill on a highway yet that a CC wouldn't hold speed.

That creates more problems with rives who expect the "Autopilot" to do thier job so they don't have to pay attention. All that is is a tailgating device.

Spending your live tailgating the car in front of you because you don't have the skills to properly drive is no way to live. Think for yourself and pick the speed you want to drive, if you meet a car pass them instead of just tailgating.

There is a big difference between tailgating and following. One is asinine, the other is standard good driver practice. I'll be that Honda system doesn't even allow tailgating. When I a following it is because the guy ahead is at a speed I am satified with. I am not one of the COMPLSIVE PASSERS who can't stand to have a car ahead of them.

The CR-V also detects the lines on the sides of the road,, and auto-centers the car automatically.
It IS strange feeling the car steer itself. It does work well.
I read a review that stated if you do not make input to the steering every 90 seconds of so,,, it signals you to do so.

90 seconds should be long enough to pour coffee from your Thermos??

Now I REALLY want one :)

Even in Wyoming where in some areas, you might see another car every 50 miles, you see tailgaters. I dont get it either....

Yep. I see totally asinine driving. strings of cars up to 10 cars long in the space that really should have only two cars in it.
