Can you buy too heavy of a rotary cutter?

The 1860 isn't a bad cutter, but it's a light duty cutter. Not something I'd want in the woods.

I think that technically it's classified as a "Standard Duty" cutter.

Semantics. Light duty, medium duty, heavy duty, standard duty, extreme duty......all mean different things to different folks. Just look on c-list at all the "heavy duty" rear blades listed for sale.

I still think an 1860 is too light to be dragging around in the woods and occasionally hitting deadfall. Step it up to at least a 26-series. Which is directly comparable to a BB600x

Semantics?

It's the classification that the manufacturers themselves are going by.

I guess if we're spending the OP's money then why not go for the best! ;)

It is very hard to find a decent used cutter. I said decent. Most are light duty that are beat all to pieces. If you can find a decent used one around here they are gonna be close to the cost of a new one. If you want to save some coin stay on Craigslist and be patient. Very patient. It took me 6 months to find my cutter and I've not seen one like it since. The cutter you were looking at was a good unit. Most all manufacturer's units in the medium duty range will be fine for 90% of users.

Yes, semantics. I could careless what fictitious or marketing lingo a mfg tries to use to classify something. Like light, medium, heavy duty. Extreme, regular, premium, , homeowner, professional, commercial, industrial, etc.

When I said it was a light duty cutter, that wasn't meant as a reference to the mfgs meaningless classification. It was meant literally. A sub-600 pound 5' cutter, is indeed LIGHT duty

Oh, and actually as per land pride website, (not that I really care, but those who are interested in classification) the 12,15,18, and 20 series are all light duty. The 25-series is standard duty. The 26-series is medium duty, and the 36 is heavy duty.

I agree concerning the buyer's search. I have got lucky twice.

Bought a Rhino SE6 from a TBN member. Great shape. Great price. Still use it today and have spent nothing on it. He even had extra shear bolts wired to the frame and I've only used one of them.

Bought a JDM1008 mounted from a JD dealer. Straight cutter that needed about $500 in repairs to be in excellent condition. I paid $1800 so have a $2300 cutter that is easily worth $3000.

I echo Turby and Overszd's experience trying to find a GOOD used cutter (in TN). FIL wound up with a new one - wasn't that much more, and requires NO refurbing or time wasted worrying about parts flying off it.

Sorry, looks like I've missed a lot being busy the past couple of days...

"They" were manufacturing reps from Bush Hog, Befco, Land Pride, Woods, Titan, and a few more that I am forgetting off the top of my head, at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, GA a few weeks ago, along with probably at least five or so dealers over the last two months, including the one I bought my tractor from, telling me that the rotary was the way to go. I had several (10+) detailed pictures of all the spots I want to mow, including pictures of the deadfall with spray cans for size reference, and trees/brush/bushes measured with open end wrenches for size reference as well. It may be because we are in the south, and there tends to be a bias in the south, but to a man, every one of them have told me to go with the rotary. Granted, not all of the manufacturers offer flails, but Land Pride and Befco have them in their current lineup and on display at the show. Before I went to the Ag Show, I was looking for a flail hot and heavy, but after "they" made "their" recommendation, I am now looking for a good rotary.

I am not in a huge hurry, so I will keep my eye on Craigslist, and worse case scenario planning on a new Woods BB60X early Spring. This is classified by Woods as a "Standard Duty" cutter, but for my operation I think it should work fine. I anticipate using it no more than six to eight times per year, so the biggest wear and tear it will face is rust and seizure from sitting. I figure if I can't find one for a helluva deal, then I will spend a little more and get one I shouldn't have to worry about for six years (gearbox warranty). Thanks for everyone's input.
