None, yet
I apologize for the long post, but I'd rather put the info out there than have you all asking questions.

A little background first.

I'e never owned a tractor, but learned quite a bit (what a person can learn from reading) in the few weeks I've been perusing this site, and for that I thank you all.

My wife and I are getting ready to close on 31.5 acres of land in eastern NC to eventually build a home on. The land is flat like almost all of eastern NC. It's wooded, covered in brush and hasn't been logged recently (probably 20-30 years, at least).

We currently live about 30 minutes from the place, and will have a house built there in four or five years. We're in no hurry to get this done, as I don't retire from the military for 3-4 years.

We plan to clear a spot for the house over the next few years, taking out most of the pines in the area the home will be situated and leaving the hardwoods that are there. We have no intention of clearing all of it, just a few acres for the house, garden work shop, etc. We'll need to clear a driveway as well.

We will have to clear quite a bit of brush to find the best location for the house, garden, workshop, etc. Once we figure out where it will go, We can let a good bit of the cleared area return to brush (or food plots).

I'd like to clear a spot for a garden, clear lanes along the property lines enough to put in a barb wire fence, and push up a berm in one corner for a range.

I'm pretty sure, after reading here, the L2501 fits my needs. It's within my budget and doesn't have the emissions control stuff.
PTO HP isn't a priority, as once it's cleared I'll be able to keep up with what mowing we plan to do.
We need the loader, as that's where most of the work gets done clearing brush.
I want a backhoe to remove stumps. I know it may be cheaper to hire that out, but it's also cheaper to do it with an axe and shovel, and that ain't happening. I use the BH for keeping ditches clear, moving logs, and I'm sure things I can't think of yet.

Since I know little about tractors, I'm asking an opinion on the packages the dealer quoted me. I've been in contact with two dealerships and the grand totals were within $500 of each other, although there were differences on each line item. This is the first go-around, we really haven't negotiated, I just got a quote for what I wanted.

Here's the package:

L2501 HST, R4 tires
FEL with QA 66" bucket, Third Function
Two rear remotes (1 float, 1 detent)
Backhoe, subframe, 12" bucket, thumb
SSQA Pallet Forks
Land Pride RCR 1260 Rotary Cutter
Land Pride BB1560 Box Blade
W.R. Long RBG2 60" Grapple
18' 7000 trailer

Subtotal (before taxes, insurance, etc)
$35810

How far off the mark is this? In other words, what is the least I should reasonably expect to get this for?

Thank you for taking the time to read all this.

Seems a tad high. Although implements add up quickly. I paid $22900.00 without the hoe, cutter or rear remotes. I had a trailer and cutter and I installed the rear remotes myself.

Thanks!.

Like I said, first round, no negotiating yet.

How do you like the tractor?

I like it a lot! Lots of torque for 25 horses. It's main function is working in the timber skidding and grappling logs. They have a loud exhaust ( maybe you read a thread here about a week ago), so hearing protection is a must for me. That's the only thing I don't like about it. Other than that, I'm very satisfied with it.

Good to hear! I'll be using it for a good bit of the same at first, removing trees and brush.

Hearing protection is a must. Been getting my ears checked annually for 26 years in military aviation, and haven't lost any hearing yet. I attribute it to always wearing my ear pro.

Not sure since you added the backhoe, grapple, and a few slight differences on implements that the 2501 I bought recently. I am really enjoying my 2501. I have similiar circumstances as you (bought land and clearing it for my future house). I will say to have them load the tires as part of the deal. My land is not flat so I have stability issues. It is also easy to get stuck (not major where I need help, just reverse direction type stuff). I also have AG rims and tires and wish I would have had the dealer swap sides to widen the stance (didn't know I could do that at the time). When I go in for my 50 hour service I will have this stuff done. I know you said your land is flat but having the most stable tractor possible is not a bad idea. You can get in trouble in a hurry.

Brazos,

Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely be looking to at least fill the tires for stability.

There's probably only 2-3 feet of elevation difference across the whole property, so I'm not to worried about it.

Any relation to the gunsmith? I have a Brazos custom 2011 and love the gun.

I'm the guy that thinks the L2501 is too loud. I had one for 2 weeks and switched it for a L3301. I just hauled the L3301 home today. You can check out my thread about the L2501 in the Kubota owning/operating section.

Sounds like you want to do serious land clearing. I think a L4701 would serve you better. Or a used L39 Kubota backhoe. Both machines are heavier and have stronger backhoes to rip out stumps. Digging stumps is very hard on the backhoes. Honestly I would hire out digging the stumps out... and only dig out what's absolutely necessary.

Another thing to consider is the hassle involved in taking backhoe off and installing all the 3 point arms, etc.

Just sharing some thoughts with you. Oh... L2501 with loader and backhoe without tax is around $23,000 right now with rebates, etc. That should give you an idea. Not sure about all the other gear.

ProjectKing,

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

i saw your thread on the loud 2501. I'm not too worried about the noise as I've spent a plenty of time within feet of running Harrier jet aircraft. I ALWAYS wear hearing protection.

I would like to get a L4701, but they're a bit out of my budget, when I consider all the implements. Also, We will only be clearing land for the house and garden, I have no intention of clearing all 31 acres.

How do you like your new L3301? Is it much quieter than the 2501? Other than engine, they're the same tractors, right?

Thank you for serving our country! Sounds like you have an exciting job!

The L3301 and the L2501 are very similar. The L3301 is assembled in USA. L2501 is made in Japan. The L3301 of course has a bunch of emissions gadgetry. And at first that was a big turn off to me. However after having the L2501 I could not stand the noise level. Installing a new muffler may have fixed it but I didn't want to mess around with it even though I could have done it fairly easy.

The noise level is a bigger issue with HST tractors. They have to run around 1700 to 2000 rpm when working. The L2501 exhaust produced a very sharp or harsh sound that just really ticked me off. I have a L3830 as well. It is not near as loud and has a smooth exhaust sound. Interesting it and the L2501 share the same manifold. But the L3830 muffler would require modifications to fit under the L2501 hood.

I have not measure dB level on the L3301 yet but it's quieter than my L3830 by a lot.

The other issue I had with the L2501 was the exhaust smell. It was like an old Ford power stroke Diesel. Very oily smelling exhaust. Never smelled another Kubota engine like it. Made me sick within a few minutes. Honestly I hated the tractor! Hah!

I have well over 1300 hours running Kubota machinery. TLB's, skid steers, excavators, tractors, etc. So I maybe more picky than others. I love my L3830. And my ZD is a fantastic machine as well. Zero complaints. I'll never sell the L3830. So far in the .5 hours I have run it I really like the L3301. But it too early for me to recommend it. I'm very impressed with the front loader which was on my L2501. Also the HST seems nice and is not very loud... for HST!
