I have had my tractor (a NH TC 29D) for awhile and have always thought it should have more power. but never questioned it until my Dad bought a kubota B3200. My tractor should have 29hp compared to his 32hp. I know he has another cylinder on me 3 to his 4, but his tractor seems to have twice the hp that mine does. Now I'm questioning whether mine should have more power, and if something's wrong. Both are hydro.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Maybe your throttle not opening all the way?

Make sure you have adequate duel delivery to the engine. Clogged tank strainer filter head, filter, pinched line, etc are the usual culprits. If you have a hydrostatic drive, make sure you replace the filters on schedule.

You should be able to tell by the tach, whether you have a fuel problem.

What are you doing when comparing this power?

:welcome:. WVTC29D! You're pushing ~700lb more tractor (+ FEL difference) with .2L less motor. Horsepower should only matter if gearing and RPM are the same when comparing. The larger engine can be expected to produce more torque at lower than PTO rpm settings, so you'd feel a difference at most operating speeds.

IMO we should only sweat hp up to the point of losing traction, tho' that can be a problem if gears/ranges leave one caught between 'power' and 'speed' ratios when working a particular implement. HST brand system and efficiency variables are difficult to quantify. Spinning all four in more than one range/gear means weight/traction vs power needs to be enhanced. :)

btw, in going up from 1.3L to 1.7L engines in otherwise the same HST tractor there is no obvious difference in pulling or FEL power, as these are both limited by their 'same' pumps vs by the hp driving them or by having more available than is needed there. Neither pump requires high RPM to go into relief when the going gets tough, so I only notice the boost when using the PTO. t o g

Thanks for all the replies. After driving the Kubota again I am inclined to think it might be the governor action. You can tell when his is picking up, but mine not any, and never really had since new.( this is my first diesel tractor and nothing else to compare it to). I am thinking I will try to see if a guy I know who used to work at a NH dealer might work on it, or take it back to my dealer which is 1 1/2 hours away.

Can ask dealer to put it on a pto dyno to see true HP.

Ok, after reading the manual I adjusted the smoke valve some, and it made a big difference. The manual says to work the throttle from idle to full throttle, and there should be some smoke. When I started I didn't have any smoke at all. I moved the nut about 1/4 turn and got some smoke. During the test drive I seemed to gain a lot of power. When I have more time during the day I will adjust it a little better. Thanks everyone for your replies and help.

Okay, you stumped me. I can't find any reference to a "smoke valve" in my manual or parts diagram. I have the owner's manual, maybe you read this in the shop manual? Photo please? Glad you got more power.

Wow! I wish all tractors were that easy to turn up! I'm surprised they make it so easy to add fuel!
