Eating in the 50's

I can remember sitting in my grandmother's little kitchen while she made pies from scratch. They had this stool/step stool in the kitchen that I would sit on while she made the pies. They had that stool at two, made three, other houses but I don't know what ever happened to it...

The first house I can remember my grandparents having was small but my grandfather had added on to the house. I went by the house via Google Earth and it sure was a small house. Anyway, I can remember sitting in the kitchen while my grandmother rolled out the pie dough and I would eat the dough scraps. She told me that if I kept eating the raw pie dough I would get worms. :confused3::laughing::laughing::laughing: I use that one on my kids when they eat raw dough but they just look at me like I am nuts. :D:D:D Smart kids they are.:laughing::laughing:

We did have Fondue at restaurants, I think the Melting Pot, and in the house. It was one of those faddish things to do at house parties back in the 60's and early 70's. It is good though.

Later,
Dan

Anyone else harvest wild dandelion? My mother and grand mother always fixed it with a hot bacon dressing....it gets tough and bitter after it starts to bloom
Yep, my grandmother fixed them. I liked the buds, that formed the yellow flowers. Haven't had them in many yrs.

I never figured out the appeal of going to a restaurant and having to do your own cooking...
The Melting Pot - The Original Fondue Restaurant

We went one time to a self-cook restaurant. I had the ham. When it was luke warm, I started eating it. It was a hot summer day and I was to tired to slave over a hot grill with a dozen other people trying to cook the perfect steak.

I used to eat the left over pie dough too. Yes they told me I would get worms and my response was BAIT!
Mon used to tell me not to eat the watermelon seeds, that a watermelon would grow in my stomach.

Never heard of a self cook restaurant. My wife neither. We looked it up. Safe to say we will pass on that experience. Learn something everyday.

The melting pot is advertised here. Never had a desire to go.

My mother used to cook rabbit stew when my dad or uncles shot one. One day an uncle was watching her cut it up and said, you know rabbits and cats look the same when skinned. She never made it again.

The closest we ever got to oven ready food was the introduction to our house of the TV Dinner. Not sure of the year but it was turkey and I'm pretty sure it was Swanson's. It wasn't like mom's but it got me by sometimes. The other
kids thought we were rich because we had TV Dinners.
