Every time I saw a U-Haul truck broken down on the side of the highway that came to mind. ... 'Look there's one more customer who never anticipated how much adventure he was getting into.'

Yep, reminds me of a uhaul adventure, back around 1980, moving my sister from Houston tx to Cleveland oh. I flew down, helped drive uhaul back. It had a about a 20g fuel tank, which we discovered the hard way. Had to stop for gas every couple hrs.

I hate U-Haul. Every vehicle I have rented from them has given me serious concerns about its safety. The last time was 12 years ago, and I do intend for it to be the LAST time. Stupid truck wouldn't start in the morning, and I had to wait 3 hours for them to come out. I had checked everything to make sure nothing was left on, and there was nothing, so I knew it was a battery problem. Their "mechanic" (using that term loosely) just sneered at me, and jumped it. I let it run for over an hour (the jerk said 45 minutes) and then it wouldn't start again. 2 hours later he came out and replaced the batteries, which is what I told him in the first place. He wouldn't look me in the eye, either.

Oh, and their customer "service" was quite rude about the whole thing, and when I took it back past the deadline (because of THEIR problems!), I had to pay overage charges.

Never again.

I too avoid U Haul and haven't given them business in 20+ maybe 30 years... the last couple of trucks I have rented for moving things have been from a local truck/trailer rental company. They are much more accommodating, will work with you and help you with your specific situation. And they seem to care more for their vehicles. Maybe because they are small privately held company. I've never been able to rent trailers from U-haul... my 1500 Silverado is not eligible...

Penske has some nice trucks here... and there was a great family owned rental yard with dozers, backhoes, lift gate cube vans and rollback car carriers...

January 1 they were sold to a large chain and even though it has only been 7 weeks their 4.5 star reviews are now 2 star... many saying the same... the service all had come to expect was gone and the prices up as much as 50%...

No... it's not fun so an adventure is what you don't want when moving.

My one and only experience with Penske was SC to MN a couple years back. One year old International van truck broke down 3 times. Glad I was towing a car behind so I didn't have to hand tools to the mechanic.

Only one year old... come to think of it I don't see many Internationals anymore.
