On one tree I used a spinning rod to cast a light fishing line over a limb then pulled up a heavier line and followed it with a rope. On another I shot the weighted line up with a slingshot. I liked the slingshot better. Attaching just the right amount of weight to the line to get it over the limb and still be heavy enough to pull the line down took some trial and error.

Back when my son was still in school and living with us - he made a potato gun. Used the wife hair spray for propellant. Well - - after he shot all our potatoes out into our little lake - he found the bag of tennis balls that I had as play toys for the dog. He wasn't so thrilled when I made him go out and retrieve the balls. The wife was less than pleased that he had launched twenty pounds of spuds either. Everyone was happy that he hadn't blown himself up with the darn contraption.

I used my quadcopter to measure the height of a tree.

Yeah, I keep asking around if people have used their drones to pull string over tree branches.

Did you measure height with the GPS elevation data, or pulling a string and measuring it?

The height of trees is pretty easy to measure while standing on the ground with a transit, even a home made one with a protractor would work pretty well. Simple geometry problem. We learned all of that in the 8th grade. Also you can easily measure the distance across rivers without getting your feet wet. I can show you how! Old Euclid (ancient Greek and geometry major) was a pretty smart guy. I don't know if they teach such things in school any more, but we had a pretty good dose of practical math in the 8th grade and I took an elective course of geometry in the 10th grade as well. It is amazing how much ancient people know about the natural world.
