My experience is a lot of motorcycle riders tailgate... just natural as they know they can stop faster. Just like when I'm towing I keep more distance than usual. Regardless if he was or wasn't you can't expect to get hit by flying plywood. Ouch!

When im on my motorcycle I will only tailgate in heavy traffic. For the reason, if you leave too much space it's inevitable that somebody won't see you and will cut you off every time, and in traffic there's no where to get away.

That is the dilemma for sure!

Read the article. He was close enough to be hit on the head.

Most people tailgate, and have no clue that they are doing so.

A piece of plywood flying off a moving vehicle might go to the ground quickly, or may tumble in the air a little. Seems if the motorcycle was 30' back or 130' back he could have been hit or missed by the plywood in either scenario. At 50 mph a vehicle travels about 75 feet per second.

Whether this guy was tailgating or not seem irrelevant to this actual incident. All the same, tailgaters irritate me....

Not hauling something wrong, but surely hauling something interesting.

More: look up 'SLJ900'.

As a structural engineer by training... all I can say is, that is cool! Thanks for posting.

Thanks.

A little more info - there are several Youtube videos of the SLJ900. A comment (unconfirmed) in one said that China cloned a machine invented and used in Norway.

No wonder why I liked it. Relatives from Norway... dad immigrated just after WWII. My uncle was one of the founders of AKER Norsco. The first to tap into the offshore oil in the North Sea in the 60s.

And I bet the transitions from joint to joint do not jar your teeth like those in CA. Either our works could care less, or are clueless as to how to smooth them out, But a 2" rise at 70 mph sure gets your attention. Almost as much as when the resurfacing machines leave a 4" cut and they let traffic keep going. Serioulsy, when you come to the part that is not cut, it's amazing there isn't more blowouts.

Back on topic, no pic, but coming home from a Neil Diamond concert in Fresno, yesterday, I was passed by a guy with a loaded Tundra pickup, towing a tent trailer. OK, you say. Well the speed limit for towing (and those little bitty trailer 12" tires) is 55. I was doing 72, and he had to be doing between 75-80. I stayed out of his lane and well behind, so I could avoid debris, when something did happen.

I do not believe in pushing mine and everyone elses luck.
