Cutting up a cedar that we paid to move and save to no avail. It didn't root. Also pulling out the metal stakes that I had to hold it in place.

Wonder what the opinion is on these...are they helpful, and which brand/model?

This is why I don't often take large trees from people and prefer my telephone pole-sized locust trees.... :laughing:

A maple tree fell on a friend's house and I hauled it off for him as a favor. This one round is 31" in diameter, and yielded about 58 pieces of firewood. There were some that were over 36" as I couldn't cut through them with the 18" saw.

First pic is after I rolled it up onto the splitter by hand.
Second pic is after I halved it in one split. Little splitter with the new Harbor Freight engine did well with that.
Third picture is the wood from that one 31" round, about 58 pieces.
It'll heat my house for 2-3 days in the coldest of winter around hear. :thumbsup:

I have one but found it easier and faster to roll the log over with a peavey then cut the other side.

I cut a lot of logs that diameter for firewood. Usually between 20' and 40' long. I make all my 16" apart cuts 3/4 through the log while its on the ground. Then I roll the log over 180 degrees and finish the cuts. Only have to roll it once.

I clamped a "T piece" onto a peavey to turn it into a log lifter. How much faster or easier it is to use than just cutting the log on the ground will be a matter of opinion.

I tend to use it when the log is a little smaller (say 10" to 12") and then you don't have to worry about hitting the ground with the chain. With bigger logs, I do what MossRoad said and cut 3/4 or 2/3 way through and roll the log.

One thing that does slow down using the log lifter is that I am usually working where the tree fell, in amongst all the other branches and sticks. This can make it hard to get a clear place where the handle can drop to the ground.

The only advantage is not having to worry about blunting your chain in the dirt. IMO

I think the best brand would be a Logrite Cant Hook. Then you add their stand to it to make it a long lifter. The easiest place to find one would be at your Stihl dealer. The Stihl cant hook is a log rite.
