I hauled a 28' sailboat mast in my 8' bed for over a 100 miles. Not an issue. I had the tailgate up and used a couple of 2 x 4's 12' long to support it over the tailgate. It had two straps on it.

We do this often, just need to strap it down properly and not exceed the capacity of the truck tie downs. Make sure you have a flag and you're good. Police only care if there is not a flag.Saw this today, rural ND.
What do you do when you need to haul 14ft boards, and only have a 6ft truck bed?

This guy passed me in the oncoming lane @ 70 mph. I had to hit the gas pretty hard to catch him again, just to see if what I saw was really what I saw.

That's an aluminum extension ladder btw, in case you can't tell from the pics (sorry for the dirty windshield - bugs).
And that's a uhaul, they usually have over the tire straps for the front and pull down ties in the rear.
