Congratulations! that is a beautiful log. What are your plans for it?

I'm taking it to the sawmill. My buddy has a portable band saw mill but he can't handle anything of that magnitude. I called the owner of the sawmill and he said it would bring better money cut in 1/2.

Pretty nice log 4570. You grow some awful good oak down in that country. Up here it would bring a lot more. Oak just doesn't grow like that here.

The big one brought $342.

What is MBF? Million board feet? The big log was 750 bf.

mbf => 1000 board feet. Why "m" I don't know. Maybe from Roman numerals. Log prices on mill spec sheets are listed as dollars per mbf. Prices vary with species and the quality of the log. So your 750 bf log was worth $456/mbf to get you $342.

Edit: Some places they convert every thing to tons and pay by weight. Especially low grade wood.

So is his $456/mbf toward the high end for oak? What is the range?

It would seem to me that paying by weight would be a real problem because it all depends on the moisture content.

This load brought $347. I didn't get a BF total on it though. IMG_0084.JPG

It is hard to say. Markets vary a lot by region, driven by supply and demand. Sometimes moving wood 100 miles can make a big difference in price. A spec sheet I have for red oak delivered to a local log yard reads like this:

Select - $625/mbf 14" min top 3 clear faces min
#1 - $525/mbf 12" min top 3 clear faces min
#2 - $400/mbf 10" min top 2 clear faces min
Pallet - $200/mbf 8" min top no clear faces

But you can't go by that. Pricing is very regional. In general oak is higher up here. Good logs are harder to come by and most of those get shipped to Canada. So there are many factors.

Go to some local mills or log yards and ask for a spec sheet.

I should add those specs above are for a mill looking to mainly manufacture lumber or flooring. If you got a spec sheet from a mill that cut ties for a living the requirements would be simpler. All they want is a straight, sound log that is big enough in diameter to cut a tie from. Clear faces are not important to them. They would pay less, maybe just one grade. So even if you brought them a perfectly clear log you would get the tie log grade price. It is all about local markets.
