I have a laminated card containing my name and a file # that was issued to me by the VA when I started on the GI Bill in 1969. Lowe's and HD have always accepted that card as proof of veteran status when I have taken the advantage of their discounts on Memorial and Veterans Days and July 4th.

That 10% veteran discount at Lowe's & Home Depot is good every day all year long. You don't have to wait for advertised discounts on holidays, but you do have to tell them you have a Veteran ID and most times the clerk will want to see it.

smstonypoint.......the Lowe's and Home Depot 10% discounts have absolutely nothing to do with Memorial, Veterans Day, or July 4th.
Someone is feeding you bad information!
If you show your VA ID card to the checkout clerk, and do not get a 10% discount EVERY DAY, ask to speak to the store manager.
The EVERY DAY 10% veteran discount is NATION WIDE corporate policy for both of those businesses.

I didn't say otherwise. I was speaking to the case of the ID that passed muster in the past. The year-round discount policy is relatively new.

Read the fine print. 10% coupons usually have a max of $500 savings at these stores. BTW: H.Depot and Men are Ds will usually honor a How Low can you go coupon.

"The year-round discount policy is relatively new"

Guess that depends on the definition of "relatively new".
I have been using the 10% veteran discount for 10+ years.

I have been using the 10% veteran discount for 10+ years.

I would say that May 1 of this year is relatively recent.

Lowe’s is celebrating National Military Appreciation Month and, beginning May 1, expanding its support of the military by announcing an enhanced military discount – 10 percent off personal purchases every day to current and honorably discharged members of the U.S. military.

Military discount expanded for veterans and active duty at Lowe’s

Perhaps I should been more explicit, but I did say that I started the GI Bill in 1969. I have an honorable discharge (after four years in the USCG, 1965-69). Before May 1, I was eligible for the discount only on the three holidays I listed.

Almost went for the 10% 4th coupon from TS but talked myself out of it. Decided to wait till I have a loan paid off to make more implement purchases.

Perhaps it depends on where you live in the USA.
I was a USN pilot honorably discharged in 1967.
I live in Florida, and have been receiving both the Lowe's, and Home Depot 10% discounts, on all individual sales, on all days, for 10+ years.

My wife being a retired Navy Captain, I have a DEERS card (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) which is the "dependent" version of a military ID. It allows me to access military bases and I have commissary, exchange and full health care privileges. It has to be renewed every 4 years on base with my wife present.

The closest HD honors my card as a valid military ID, but this HD will not give a discount on "commodity" items such as lumber, plumbing, electrical etc. Things a contractor would buy in bulk. It's good for tools and most other store items and it's good year round.

Thanks to my wife's 26 years of service and my years of chasing her around where ever she was stationed.
