What is needed is something that limits the truck speed to 5MPH or less if the dump is raised. Such a thing does not yet exist.
Sort of what I was thinking... if you exceed 5mph or whatever the dump is lowered... easy fix. Your idea might have more safety merit though.

It's amazing how often a dump truck with the bed up causes an incident....
Some kids could've really been hurt in that situation
A while back I posted re a similar incident except the pedestrian bridge crossed US 101 - one of only two major west coast routes Mexico border to Canada border.

The bridge was at the perimeter of San Francisco, between the airport and downtown. Something like 12 lanes wide. A major commute-to-work route coming in from Silicon Valley.

Heck of a mess. But like this one, no one hurt.

Unfortunately, drivers train themselves to ignore the LED so they can spread-dump; and if equipped with an alarm, they rip it totally out or bypass it. What is needed is something that limits the truck speed to 5MPH or less if the dump is raised. Such a thing does not yet exist.

That wouldn't work for my driver because he goes well over 5 mph when spreading rock on my drive. He is also so good i do very little leveling - only at the starts and stops. I so appreciate him.

A couple of weeks ago, a raised dump truck bed took down the wires just outside my office. It made quite a BANG and took out our phone service. Since almost all our work is done on computers linked to a remote server, we got off work early...its too bad it didn't happen at 9am instead of 3pm.

I'd consider that careless, not good or skilled. Just cause "ya can" don't mean "ya should".

I guess I am not in the habit of restricting those that can from doing what they are able to protect those that are not smart enough to know better. I believe those that can should be allowed to do so - let excellence shine instead of restricting it.

My average spread speed is around 40kmh. Ditch to ditch spread no grader on oil field lease roads. If you screw it up everyone behind you is PO because now they have to drive over your pile until the grader makes his rounds, this is easiest with clams but I've also done lots with end dump. What I don't get is how these guys don't feel that box up there. You cruise along with the box up in the air it's going to get awful wobbly in a hurry.

You have a different idea of "excellence" than I do. Slow, steady, and precise is the key to reducing accidents of all sorts.

As I said, just because someone "can" do something, that doesn't mean they "should". There is always a chance of something out of the norm that could cause an issue. Going as fast as you "can" go means there is less chance to avoid the 'random somethings' that are out there waiting to cause accidents. People going at it as hard as they can are the entire reason there are accidents.

Where you consider limiting 5MPH while the dump is raised a limitation on people's ability, I consider it something to limit their ability to screw up. Those people are accidents waiting to happen...
