Tractor
N/A
We have recently purchased 20 acres on land and I am looking for somewhere to begin on what we need to maintain our land. I have limited knowledge on where to start. I have looked at the main brands Case,Deere,Kioti, and Kibota. what would be a good size to start out with and what kind of pricing would I be looking at.

Thanks for all the help.

WELCOME. All here have worked through tractor selection.

Is all of your land field, or does it include a home and yard? woodland? pond(s)?

What are your intentions for the land and your tractor?
Hobby farming? Real farming? Livestock? Kitchen garden and yard helper?

Will you operate on sloped ground, which effects tractor stability considerably? Or is your land flat?

How much dirt contact work do you foresee?
Plowing, smoothing land, driveway maintenance, brush removal, trail construction

Do you use automatic transmissions in the vehicles used by all potential operators, or clutch and gear transmissions?

Do you have inside tractor storage?

HERE ARE SOME RELEVANT THREADS IN THE TBN ARCHIVE: Google

Determine what weight and horsepower tractor you need first, then go brand shopping, otherwise you will be overwhelmed with the choices.

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

jeff9366 has asked many questions... and they're all spot-on! Answer these and then we'll start asking more in order to assist you.

Enjoy the site.

P.S: Notice that none of the questions regard a particular brand (colour) of tractor. We don't work like that.

Where ever you spend your money, consider this:

Once spent it's gone forever! What you bought with it will be with you forever!! A little haste (frugality) can lead to a lifetime of waste........geez I'm kicking myself for not getting the ....... This little whatever is just too small to do what needs to be done. Geez I wish I would have gotten a cab. Sure hate cold winters and dusty plowing/mowing/hay baling.............get the drift.

Having a full service dealer network costs money. If you need it expect to pay for it.....(Brand x). For the do it yourselfer, dealers are for initial purchases and will seldom if ever be seen again. You can save big bucks buying the low ball sale price.....(brand y)!

Lots and lots of questions will help us get you close but bottom line you need to to put your seat into the tractor's seat. Each manufacturer has a little different layout...

So how long you planning to live at the property? (think long term investment with a tractor) Saving a grand or two in the cost spread out over 20 or 30 years is not much. But you need to have somewhat of a budget.

I'm one of the few that thinks bigger is NOT always better. I have plenty of time to work with the tractor. I would not want to go much smaller than my 28 HP. I have not had much need to go above that HP, sure I could mow faster but that's just less seat time.

You planning to build roads? How much mowing do you plan to do? Haying takes lots more HP than I have. Save some money so you can buy implements, and a tractor without implements is just yard art.

Things I hear that people wish they bought sooner; Grapple, hydraulic top-N-tilt and hydraulic remotes. The regular implements that people usually get are brush hog, box blade and rear blade. There are hundred more implements to let the tractor do most of the work, so you can take it easy.

Another thing to think about in tractor size is clearance. The 2400 is close to the ground. Compared to the other 3 I have, there are several implements that can't be raised sufficiently to get them off the ground for transport between storage and workplace, nor proper usage. One of those is a post hole digger which seems to come in handy for folks quite often!!!!!

Then there is weight, too small, too light, can't counter implement effects on lateral torque. If you are trying to use a 3 pt blade scraper set at an angle to grade your driveway or running along a ditch you dug to bury a water or electrical line, you may not have enough weight to the tractor to keep the blade from determining how the tractor steers!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, just found your site. I was wondering how big a disk a 45hp tractor will pull.

Do not break in on someone else's thread.

Start your own thread under OWNING/OPERATING or ATTACHMENTS.

Info needed: Your tractor weight. Weight is much more relevant than horsepower in ground contact work. (Your tractor MODEL should be in your profile, with your tractor BRAND/New Holland)

Your tires: R1/R4, loaded or filled only with air?

Will you use the Disc to smooth after a moldboard plow, its primary purpose? Or for some other use?

Sorry. Still figuring this out.

For 20 acres of land you should be looking in the 30-50hp range (25-45 PTO hp).

That said, it may be helpful to think ahead about what suite of machinery you'll eventually need to maintain the property. No one machine will be suitable for all tasks.

Most folks need a combination of a lawn mower and a larger tractor to accomplish bigger tasks.

Myself, my long term goal is to have a combination JD X590 riding mower, a 30-40hp 4wd Compact Utility tractor, and a big, old, heavy, 2wd tractor.

Hi

I have 1 acres already and thinking about purchasing 3 acres more land. I have 1 Axion 900 Tractor, I bought this 3 years ago and I also bought a Samson modal M tractor 6 month ago. both tractor are worthy for my work. I am happy with their reliabilities.

Keep Rockzz :) :)

Really Michael? <sarcasm> For 1 acre of land you have a Claas Axion 900 series tractor?!? A 410hp tractor? Well, no wonder you're looking for a few more acres.

Oh, but let's not forget your Samson Model M... when was it built Mate? (here's a hint, somewhere between 1918 - 1922) At least the Samson Model D was only built in 1919.

If you're going to ADVERTISE by 'stealth'... you might try actually being 'stealthy'.
