Tire Selection Anyone go from R1 to bar-turf and regret it?

That is a nice looking tread pattern for a light duty tractor mainly used on a lawn, I would wonder about the side wall and tread strength in the woods.
If you have the R-1 ag tires the R-4 industrial are a lot less aggressive and easier on a lawn, they do give up a lot of traction in the mud or snow.

The particular tractor I may put them on is almost exclusively a woods tractor. Small enough to fit in tight/ sketchy (sometimes off camber) areas, but large enough to get the job done. I'm a dirt biker with a TON of experience with tread patterns. To me, the xtra-trac pattern "looks" like it could handle hardcore dirt/ forest very well. But I don't know for sure - because well, tractors aren't exactly dirt bikes (but 'kinda').

For woods/snow, do you have chains already ?

A set of chains, even on fairly worn tires, would help a lot for the above conditions.

I have chains. But only use them when I know I'm going to be doing something I know I will be doing something 100% chain-ey. My tires are just super worn and would like to replace them with something different to try. I'm weird like that. I even special order (somewhat unusual) dirt bike tires from Australia just to be different. Might not make a whole lot of sense, but I just like to go outside the norm whenever possible. Sometimes I luck out in good ways with my (occasionally) silly mindset.

I ride street, so I get the Must Try Neat Tires disease :D

Esp. 2 wheels on dirt.

Tractors, I'm an R1 guy, but I'll give you that Goodyear posted here is a neat compromise design. Pls post your impressions of them, or whatever you do go with. Thinking about it.... they remind me (a non-quad rider) of ATV tires.....

Will definitely post my impressions of them if I get them.
"Must. Try. Neat. Tires..." - Captain Kirk has definitely uttered those words more than once.

A set of those tires on a fairly big tractor at the local ag dealer's yard last fall caught my eye, too. It looked like a grippier tire than my R-4s, but not as likely to rip up turf as badly as a standard R-1.

Personally I'd stick with R1 if traction is what you are looking after. They do dimple the lawn but I never had any permanent rutting from using them when I had my kubota L2500. My JD has R4 industrial and while they are durable tires they are absolutely horrible when it comes to traction.

I'm not sure if you have considered this or not but if you go with an industrial/turf tire over an Ag R1 you will probably also have to get a set of rims to match your new tires. Ag rims are typically pretty narrow and won't accommodate the large width of R3/R4s.

I have seen those bar-turf and they are a super flotation tire and think they are meant for wet lawns and such. They seemed pretty lightweight and fragile in that you could tear them up with ag work, rocks or in the woods. Check that aspect out first but then stay with R1's. Especially in the woods.

The more I info. I 'dig' up and/ or see, [pun intended] the more I think a new set of R1s for that particular tractor is best. The xtra-tracs sure look cool though. Perhaps I will try a set on one of my other more multi-use tractors in the future.
