Rural Bashing?

It has been my experience that most women do not want to work. They want comfort and the fruits of success. Country living involves a lot more maintenance than city living does.

I won't step into that. Maybe it is true. If so, I am a very lucky guy as my wife has worked along side of me here on our ranch for 30 years. There were countless times that I could not have made it without her help. Never a single complaint. And after a full day of work, she changes out of what I call her "peasant clothes", cleans, dresses up and is as beautiful as the day we married 38 years ago.

My wife grew up in the country and is a hard worker, especially at home. She keeps up really pretty flower beds all around the house, does a lot of the garden work, and keeps a very tidy house. And does much of the cooking and cleaning. And works part time. She won't drive the tractor, but will weed flower beds and use a wheelbarrow to get rid of the weeds over the hill.
When we built our house she helped me stand walls, and do lots of stuff. And she works out daily and keeps fit. It's worked out for us for 30 yrs so far.

Everyone has their way of doing things. My coworkers don't understand rural living, but I don't understand city living. They'd come with a "Hey, any cows wander into your yard?" to which I'd reply "hey, anyone randomly key your car?" and "Hey, how many tractors do you have again?" and I said "Not enough, but at least I don't have to park on the street".

We've been going back and forth for years. He just chooses to not go outside. Ever. I guess if that's your outlook, you can get by until the crime, noise, and pollution start coming in your house.

I could go on & on about city living... which I had to live as Naval dockyards are always situated in major city ports. You always locked your doors, day & night. There was always noise from traffic & aircraft. Pollution, I didn't really notice until I finally retired down here... to a place with the cleanest air in the world.

I've already noted about the quiet environment (bliss!) and that I don't lock my doors anymore... but I didn't mention that, during the first 3 months of moving here I coughed every morning & night; getting rid of the years of city 'crap'! Fresh. Clean. Air.

And, yes, I smoke a pipe.

Maybe you've spent your life around a different brand of woman than I. The women in my family do everything from law enforcement, UX design, military, farming, ranching, carpentry, etc. Every night, my wife is out working with the sheep and riding her horses. The "city women" I work with are also hard chargers that work their rears off, albeit in an office environment.

My wife would like to visit you... it is not going to be pretty, either. She is the hardest working woman I have ever met, and could probably kick most city dudes butts. All 5 ft 3 inches and 125 lbs of Wolverine... You may want to leave the country for a spell...

Steppenwolfe, you have described my wife exactly - almost the same size - 5'1, and 120, and amazes me daily with how hard she can work. Pure admiration for her from me.

In our family women that did not/do not have careers outside the home were/are generally regarded as "domestic engineers"...and the term is used in a literal sense...

Do you ever have (perhaps well intentioned?) friends or acquaintances bash rural living -- to you or in front of you?

I've had co-workers who could just not understand why I would live in the country,

I tell 'em it sucks and one day I hope to ...... , all along hoping they stay where they are, that is "in town":thumbsup:

Just came across this thread, (read the whole thing)

I grew up in the middle of the Salt Lake valley as did my wife. 21 years ago we moved to the country. (30 miles west of SLC) If I were to suggest moving back into the city I'd be going alone. Currently I am just about to retire and were looking for much more land in southeast Idaho. I can't stand the traffic. (I work in SLC)

To the OP; I tell everyone I hate it where I live, that way they'll stay in the city.:laughing:

This is what I have to look at everyday. I know it sucks, but someone has to do it.
