How many miles to wait before you tow a trailer with a new truck? The manufacturers used to say 500 miles but I've heard everything from nothing to more. We might get a new Toyota Tundra V8 and just trying to guestimate things. Load would be 7000 lbs.

I'd wait until you got a Ford truck!

Just kidding, (I have both brands) does your OM have anything in it?

As soon as I brought it home it would be hooked to a trailer. I don't wait, ever, the last 6 trucks I bought new worked from the get go..

Don't own yet so no OM. It likely says 500 miles but I'm looking for experience from the practical application of others.

I'm guessing you don't have too many hills, so the only time engine feels that additional towing stress is when accelerating. Just take off slower.

I would find it hard to believe nowadays that there is a waiting period. I typically hook my new trucks to my boat the same day. Pretty sure most farmers don't wait either. Plus you can view an owners manual online.

From the OM

■Break-in schedule
If your vehicle is new or equipped with any new power train components
(such as an engine, transmission, differential or wheel bearing), Toyota recommends
that you do not tow a trailer until the vehicle has been driven for
over 500 miles (800 km).
After the vehicle has been driven for over 500 miles (800 km), you can start
towing. However, for the next 500 miles (800 km), drive the vehicle at a speed
of less than 50 mph (80 km/h) when towing a trailer, and avoid full throttle
acceleration

I don't know anyone that actually does that. Not tow over 50 mph? That would get you killed in much of the country.

I'd just use it for the purpose you bought it for and not worry about it.

And second the idea of waiting until you bought a Ford.

(sorry, couldn't resist)

Just me, but the stupid price for all these new vehicles, I'd follow their recommendations along with reasonable warm up & cool down times after operating. Some folks just like to trade every few years so..... just run it. Having no vehicle payment for years in between trucks is very nice. Wether if makes a difference of not, who knows. It puts me in my happy place to think I'm doing good in the long run. :drink:
