I am having a problem with my JD 4410...I cannot tell when I am in 4 WD!! The light on the switch lights up, but I feel no difference and the little 4 WD symbol on the hour meter flasshes on and off intermitingly.

The dealer says that there is a problem with a sensor and JD is issuing recalls to replace it but they cannot do anything until I receive my letter from JD.

Does anyone have a similar problem. The dealer also said to see if the diagnostic light flashes (looks like asn open book) but I am not sure what this is all about.

Also, I did notice that I lost power going up a steep hill with my MX-5 operating. No response to forward hydro pedal, although I thought I was in 4 WD.

Thanks for any help.

I have not had any problems with the 4 WD en/disgaging. You should be able to tell if it is engaged. It should be more difficult in tighter turns on hard surfaces. I turn it on an off quite frequently when mowing on step hills. On for traction, reduces spinning, and aids in breaking. Off for sharp turns. It spins easier when the 4 WD is off.

What do you mean by losing power? I sounds like the e-hydro just stopped. This has nothing to do with the 4 WD. When this happens, the diagnostic light flashes it's code. The quick fix is to turn off the key and restart (reboot). Sometimes you can wait 15-30 seconds and the pedals start working again. This happend to me half a dozen times during the 90 degree days when mowing, now it does not happen in the cooler weather? BTW, you should also be in the A (low) range on step hills and using the load match may help.

Jep,
You mentioned the problem of your hydro malfunctioning in 90 degree weather. I have this happening also in cold (30 degree) weather. I have also used your "quick fix", but what is causing this and what is the real fix?

On my 4410 I can hear, and sometimes feel, when the 4 wd engages and disengages. Also in cold weather there is a delay when disengaging the 4 wd.
The diagnostic light is the light on the the right fender with the picture of an open book.

To the first poster in the thread: If you enlist the aid of another person, you can watch the 4WD actuator work (or not work) while the switch is turned on and off. Look under the left side of the tractor, just ahead and slightly below the rear axle housing. You should see a small hydraulic cylinder. See if it moves in and out as the switch state is changed. The tractor needs to be running, since it is supplied by the hydraulics. Also as pointed out above, if you drive a short way on pavement with 4WD on, you often will feel a little bump when it is turne off. My experience has been that on grass or dirt, you often can't feel it come on or off. I am curious about the light near the hour meter that flickers on and off because there isn't an 4WD indicator there. The cruise control symbol looks very similar to the 4WD symbol. Maybe that is what you are seeing.

Has anyone else experienced a problem like this on their 4X10 models? I've got an '02 4310, and it looks like my 4wd just pooped out over the weekend, though the switch claims its disengaged,( i.e., I can't disengage 4 wd, where engaged is default on the hydraulic ram driving the rod).

Suggestions/comments appreciated.

JEA check for pulled wires under the tractor on the left of the tranny just in front of the rear axle. I had the wires to the 4wd solenoid get snagged and pulled apart. When this happened the tractor wouldn't come out of 4wd.

Many thanks for the suggestion. Indeed, I followed the hydraulic line from the cylinder which engages the front drive shaft over to an electric diverter, then followed the electrical wires back. As you suggested, PsRumors, the electrical connection had one wire pulled out just enough to break the circuit! An easy fix! I'm not one to rip on JD, but I must admit that leaving all those electrical connections exposed on the underwise of the tractor presents some weaknesses. It seems like these really should be encased in some sort of rigid conduit in the future.

JEA, I agree. There needs to be some protection. JD states they have a "rental kit" which consists of skid plates. I responded, on a $17K tractor you shouldn't need to add $300 worth of plates, common sense would tell you it is needed standard.

Luckily you were able to put the wires back together, I had to replace both solenoids, $50 on a 25 hour old tractor. I tucked the wires up as well as I could and some day plan to buy the plates.

Any clear conclusions on the loss of power with ehydro's? I have struggled with this from 30 to 60 hours where all that happens is I lose power (no change in rpm's). Kind of dangerous as I get jerked forward when the transmission loses power.

Any ideas?
