Tractor
JD x530
Hi. We have a small startup business on a five acre homestead (200 chickens, some goats, rabbits, an acre of garden land) and we are looking to buy a tractor. I have a JD x530, but it is time for something bigger (for various FEL tasks, snow removal, stall mucking, 200 foot gravel driveway/parking lot maintenance, tilling, etc). We had settled in on looking for a used tractor with a FEL in the 30-35 HP range and the 10-12 thousand dollar range. Last Friday we were at the local NH dealer looking at a couple of used tractors (a TC29D, a used Kubota, and an old Ford 2120) and they offered us a deal on a brand new Workmaster 33 with a FEL (manual shift) for 16,500. I have been looking online for reviews and opinions about this particular model and have not really found much (sorry if I am looking in the wrong places). Would love to hear some opinions about this tractor. The idea of a brand new tractor with a 2 year bumper-to-bumper and 6 year power train warranty that we will be taking very good care of appeals to us. Just wondering if folks think it is worth stretching the budget a bit and if the WM33 is a decent machine? Or should we keep looking?

Thats a good price for that tractor. I was quoted $18,500 for the same. The workmaster is made by LS. You can check the LS forum for some general info about that tractor. Quality seems really good. I really liked the feel of the one I drove.

When we were shopping, the only real "complaint" we had about the Workmaster series was that Dad (who is 6' & change and has neuropathy in his feet/lower legs) had a hard time with the clutch pedal & overall felt slightly cramped.

As far as specs, features, and operation we didn't find anything wrong with it.

So be sure to at least seat test & test drive / operate if possible. Pay attention to how the controls feel when you're turned around to work backwards. Are you bumping controls, can you still operate pedals, etc.

If it fit's you physically and you can handle the budget then I think it will serve you quite well.

Best of luck in your shopping.

Shibaura engines are excellent. I think that is a pretty fair price. Sometimes new is a good choice.

Thank you all for the opinions/advice. We are heading back to the dealer on Thursday to test drive the Workmaster and see how it feels. Looking forward to being done with the search process and actually having a tractor to use! I think my son and I have built enough character cleaning out stalls buy hand and digging holes and shoveling gravel. The wheelbarrows need a rest!

I bought a new Workmaster 35 back in September and so far I love it. Test drove JD and Kubota and what really sold me was the controls. Everything just seemed to "fit" me really well.

If it were me and they had the 2120 and if it was in decent shape and a good price I would buy that. It’s a little more hp than you wanted, the loader is a little weaker compared to newer 40hp tractors. But it is reliable. I have a 1920 and it’s nice, loader is a little weak for what I need. I put a SSQA on the loader and that makes life much better go from bucket to pallet forks in less than 2 minutes. But I need to replace hoses and leaky gaskets. But it is nice to have something that is new.

The 2120 appeared to be in decent shape, but they wanted 17,900 for it. It has 1800 hours on it and comes with a backhoe (which would be nice to have, but not something I see myself using a lot). I like the 2120, but I think I feel better about spending less and having a new tractor with the warranty. The other used option there was a Kubota L3301 (242 hours) with HST and a loader that they were asking 16,900 for. Two things bother me about the Kubota ... not sure how I'd like the rocker pedal, and it was a 2015 with the emissions regen crap on it (sorry, not sure of the right terminology). I know the Workmaster has it too, but I guess I can live with it on a new tractor. Tough decisions, but if we are comfortable on the Workmaster 33, I think that is the way we are going to go. Otherwise, we will continue the search. I appreciate the feedback.

Be sure you are very comfortable with the shifting.
For
snow removal, stall mucking,
HST will shine.
I've an HST and a gear, if I had to muck stalls with a tractor I'd definitely go with HST.

Can you "test drive" it for an hour?
