Draw bar

I didn't get a draw bar with my tractor. The mounting is all there, just the steel bar with holes is not. Asked original owner and he said it did not come with one. I found the p/n and a couple places that sell online, but $65-$70 + shipping seems really high for what it is.

I don't have anything towable right now that makes me miss having it. I think having one with a hook might be useful for dragging a tree or something, but after I install the bolt-on bucket hooks I can always do that in reverse. Might be convenient to move a trailer around with a ball on it, but hooking up to my truck isn't all that difficult.

Am I missing out by not having the drawbar in the rear?

If so, is there any reason to pay that much for the oem part vs just making it on the milling machine?

Anyone with a XJ2025 have the factory draw bar and mind measuring it for me? I can't find specs for it. I can measure the slot it rides in and go from there, but would be easier to just copy measurements of oem one.

The drawbar is useful for implements; for moving bumper-pull types trailers, a 3-point trailer mover is much more convenient.

I have a few wagons and a trailer that I pull with the drawbar, otherwise I usually have a twisted clevis attached to it. If pulling from the rear, you ALWAYS want to be at, or below, the drawbar level.

Depending on what you use your tractor for, you may find that you never need your drawbar.

You will also want to be extremely careful backing up anything that you are pulling with a 3 pt mounted ball hitch or draw bar. There is no counter pressure to keep the 3 pt arms down. It's relatively easy to drive the three point arms up as high as they can go while backing with a draw bar attachment in your 3 pt hitch.

I have the draw bar off and sitting in my garage now so it would be easy for me to measure it. But, I don't know that it's the same as the one used on your tractor. My part # is 40008964. Just quickly checking mine, it measures 1 15/16" wide and it's 15/16" thick.

You can check with your local tractor supply store for a generic drawbar. This one sells pretty cheap and is roughly 30" long and 1" thick.

I think most draw bar usage is a thing in the past. Yes, I know there are some that will disagree.
I have taken off the draw bar on my two bigger tractors and I only have it on my 33hp tractor with a shackle attached to hook a chain to when I get too close to the lake while mowing.

Huh?
A true "drawbar" is completely unrelated to a 3pt hitch.
A "drawbar" is a straight hunk (thick flat stock) of heavy steel usually with a single hole for a hitch ball, or clevis, or whatever.
It sticks out straight behind, for towing, can swing slightly left to right, is permanently mounted to the tractor, and is affixed below the PTO.
I very rarely use my drawbar.

It is not very difficult to pretzel the FEL pulling a big ball of vine connected brush or tree trunks in reverse using loader mounted chain grab hooks. Loader chain grab hooks should be used for LIGHT/MEDIUM loads only.

Though it may be take a few minutes longer to maneuver the rear/center drawbar to pull with a clevis chain grab hook, drawbar is the prudent procedure. Photo #1

I also use a Three Point Hitch cross-drawbar for some pulling/towing tasks, particularly towing tree trunks slightly elevated to keep trees out of the dirt and relatively clean and prevent chain abrasion. Note three chain grab hooks. Photo #6

I use my drawbar frequently...moving utility trailer, boats, and big trailer around. Really useful when I'm picking up bales...from the bailer to the trailer to the barn. I recommend getting one. Check out craigslist, eBay, local farm supply store. Get 1 7/8" and 2" balls for it.

Buy the right drawbar and don't look back. To try to get by without a drawbar will work just fine until you need it and then you'll find out how important it is.
