Wow, I did not. It doesn't look to go beyond the front wheels so maybe it's one of two cables for getting un-stuck. Sure looks like Maine soil (a bazillion rocks) like I recall and pulling things out of the muck is a common event. That's all I can think of. There are times I really miss Maine, rocks and all.

Looks like you found the only soft spot.

He meant to do that. Kept driving in smaller and smaller circles until he screwed himself right into the ground

The cable is suspended under the tractor and fastens to the fixed drawbar under the rear axle. Purpose is to prevent pulling the tractor in two when retrieving from a bad stuck.

Good to know and duh on my part. And at 30,000 lbs or more I'll bet they can get stuck. There are Versatile tractors all around here and I never noticed. Is there a cable on each side up front?

This situation occurred earlier in the week. A real "balancing act"... Had to stop and shoot a picture. The pole is right at 40 feet long. I discovered it covered in honey suckle right at the edge of that hay barn in the background and teased it out with the forks.
