BMan2005 several years ago I did some fillet weld break tests. 6011 broke with 8-blows from a 4-pound hammer.
7018 that never seen the inside of a rod oven. Broke with 18-blows from a 4-pound hammer.
7018 right out of the rod oven. Broke with 23 blows from a 4-pound hammer.

Hey SA! Yes sir I remember reading your test somewhere before. I think you even tested 7014's? I appreciate you chiming in bud, I always value your opinion & experiences.

7014 broke with 10-blows from a 4-pound hammer.
The one that shocked me, was 6013. It broke with only 3-blows from a 4-pound hammer.

Dang hobby guys, can't make 6013 work right :D

You know the one that really floored you - the number of hits the mig weld withstood ;)

This one surprised me the most! L-56 = 29-blows

The 7018, and the Mig welds. I beat the top plate down onto the bottom plate, then back the other direction to break the top plate off.

Blade straightened, braced, and painted! Should be good for another 10 years, especially if I keep it from behind my New Holland. So I painted in Orange to match the Kubota and the Inner Bulldog fan in me won't allow me to hook a orange implement to a blue tractor . Go Dawgs

I personally think that implement behind your tractor would make a BEAUTIFUL COMBINATION, and in fact would love for you to drive it down here for me to get an up close look at it. I have a busy schedule, but 10/27/18 would be a great time for you to drive it down here if you can manage it. Be looking forward to seeing you!

Thanks man! Yeah I would be fine just running 6011's but most swear by the ductility of 7018 so I figure why not. Test I've watched agree, but my weld ability is probably not near as good as any of the rods. And those 7018's sure lay a pretty weld :)

I hear ya.

I love 7018 but my welder is an old AC Buzz Box and I typically weld old rusted steel together too. I am not making excuses, just saying some reasons why I do what I do. For what little bit of welding I do, I just keep some 6011 around and get by.

...

I did work for a place one time building pressure vessels and there we had to tack steel together using 7018, and no 6011 nor mig welds. They claimed the tacks were soft so that they would bend without being broken unlike brittle mig welds. Everything there was X-ray and we did all the seam welding with mig so I am not sure why they said that. I have built everything from pressure vessels to ship hulls with mig and everything passed x-ray. So overall I think the mig vs stick is more of a "are you out in the wind" sort of thing, and NOT which is stronger.

Blue and Orange were my jr high school colors... didn't much like them together then or now. Go Dawgs (the purple ones!) :D  :drink:

P.S. Eason is back home with us now.

That's pretty cool to hear your past and experience with welding. Since I've been learning I've told anyone who asked how I'm doing that I have true respect for a good welder. It's definitely a meticulous art, I like it.

As for might vs stick, mig would have been more versatile, but stick just kinda fit my needs a little more. Unfortunately, I'm sure I'll have a migraine one day soon now for other jobs I'll create myself that stick isn't as up for the task.

Seriously, I just remembered that blue and orange are UGA colors too! :duh: I was focusing on your tractor set up... it's even funnier now!
