JOHN DEERE MODEL M
I just ordered a ck3510hst and am thinking about getting a flail mower for it in just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for the size and type of blades I should get. Also brand recommendations titan, woodmaxx, carioni. I was thing I should stay around 60" cutting width. I don't have to cut to heavy of brush mostly under a 1". Will be mowing a field and large yard with it.

I have a DK45 and just ordered a WoodMaxx FM-78 to mow ten acres with. It is in stock but will still take about 3 weeks to get to me. I read this forum and others for a while but at some point it gets to be all static. Decided on the WoodMaxx because of some brand name recognition, use of NSK bearings and Gates belts. I'm not going to be mowing brush or saplings with it so it should hold up fine. Some folks on the massive flail thread seemingly think everyone needs to buy a $6k flail mower, not something made in China. Oh well, I don't need a $6k flail mower for what I want to do.

Flail mowers are pretty simple. You may want to get an offset one, but other than that your machine should be able to handle up to a 72” easy enough. If you get a cheap knockoff and the bearings or belt fail prematurely, spend $100 and replace them will good ones; you still likely saved yourself 2K over the price of a high end brand.

So you think I could handle a 72" mower okay. I will mostly be cutti g a field that has been cut before 2ys ago. I think I would still get the duck feet hammers just to be safe.

Those are only necessary for dense woody brush and stumps. If this is just grasses you’re mowing, the standard blades will cut freer and mulch it nicely. Depending on how dense and long it is, you may want to set your first pass to cut it down to 6 or8” and then do it again a week later at 3 or 4”.

Do you think I can handel the woodland fm-78 or do ypu think i should stay with the fm-62. I wish the had a size in between these 2 models.

I think you’re really pushing the limits with a 78”. It’s not just the load caused by mowing, but you also have 30% more rotating mass. I have a 73” on my 41hp and I think it’s a good match, but I know I could go a little more. The last thing you want is a mower that is too big that you can’t operate efficiently because you’ll end up having to run it too slow or take narrow cuts resulting in more time spent mowing and more fuel consumption.

Us I think I'm going to stay with the fm-62" with side shift. How capable are the knives versus the duck feet. If I have Goldenrod type material is that fine for the knives or should I go with the duck feet it'll end up being grass when im all done for the future.

I’ve plowed through stuff with 3/4” stocks with ease, and my blades aren’t even sharp. I can even take out rotten stumps with in.

I think the 62” with sideshift would be an excellent unit for you. I wish I had the side shift.

Thanks that info helps. Think I'm going to pull the trigger on one real soon. For the $200 more I think the side shift is a great investment.
