"A Nation With Out Borders" by Steven Hahn. A history of the US its world in an age of civil wars, 1830-1910. eals a lot with the evolution of moving out of the slave era.

"Energy and Civilization, a History" by Vaclav Smil. Traces the energy evolutions of man and machinery from acient times to today.

Neither one of these is a political diatribe clothed in a fancy title.
