Dumb Garden Question

I could be wrong but aren't beans legumes and therefore nitrogen fixing and this would naturally counteract any negative effects of the leaves?

I dunno what other essential nutrients that family of plants consumes.

Black walnut leaves and tomatoes don't get along, the tomatoes will die. Coming from a guy that used to till a lot of gardens, don't put the leaves or any kind of mulch on the garden until the day you till the garden. If it rains, the soil will remain too wet to till and it will remain that way until a long dry-spell comes along.

I don't think black walnut anything gets along with anything other than other black walnut something! I've heard that even the root system on live trees is toxic to most gardens. Is pretty wood though. A friend just pulled 60 mature trees from his woods and netted $100,000.

I won't put the leaves on the garden until the peas are a few inches high. I'm going to try this one time and see if it will work. This fall I intend to get a trailer load of chicken.....manure from a friend that has layer houses. Then till that and the leaves in for next year.

Thanks for all the advice.

I mulch oak and maple leaves w the lawn mower in the fall. Pile them up and they'll compost themselves nicely. Keep them wet. Even quicker if you mix in some green (grass clippings & kitchen cuttings).

If you don't cut them up w the lawn mower it will take a few years to compost.

Sunflowers, tomatoes, cucurbits, corn, peppers, carrots, all grow very happily in this stuff the following year.

Chicken stuff is hot; i.e. very high in nitrogen. Too much makes it easy to burn your plant roots. Mixing it with leaves, straw, and other organic matter, as well as lime or hardwood ashes, will make good compost.

Start a compost pile. Cover it with a black tarp to keep it hot & turn frequently. Check and adjust the PH prior to spreading.

Pole beans on a tall fence would be a space saver. The vines could even be routed overhead to form a canopy.

A neighbor did that with grapes to make a cave for his kid to play in. 4 corner posts and an extra one for a doorway. 6x6 concrete wire for a roof.

Walnut trees are allopathic -- they emit chemicals into the soil that discourage competition. Golden rod is another example. Thus they pretty much eliminate the success of any garden crops in their area.
