Raccoon War

We have coyotes, therefore no rabbits, coons, fox, and hardly any pheasants.
I would rather NOT feed the d*#m coyotes anything but lead.
And Gators??? I think I'd prefer the coons!

I've got a rabbit war going on. They keep getting in my garage and ransack the place. They've already chewed through all of my garage door sensor wires. I have not a clue why they like to chew on those dang wires. Not one wire is visible, there is stuff around each one of them that would make it difficult to get to. Anyway, they are good target practice with my AR-15 with a .22 conversion. I've set live traps and they bypass all the fresh veggies and head to the garage. The rabbits are worse than mice around me. I nearly hit 4 or 5 with my car every evening coming home from work. They just dart out in the gravel road.

Is this the air rifle to get?

What is the best way to charge with air?

Just saw the pump needed to recharge the air rifle.
Benjamin High Pressure PCP Hand Pump - MPN: HPP2KU

If it were me, then I'd spend some time searching for one that would fit my situation. Like neighbors, proximity to another house versus possible missed round, etc.

Also a scope for an air rifle is tougher on a scope then a regular rifle scope. Yeah I know doesn't seem likely but it is. A sound suppressor is a big plus as well.

I merely presented this one as a predator eliminator. There are a few more choices out there, one may fit your need. Folks like self live within city limits so it's my only choice. However, the two foxes that live nearby rarely show up.

So hopefully this will help you with a solution. plus it's always good muscle control practice to sharpen those skills.

Regards

LOL A raccoon would catch the pellet in his teeth, spit it out, then gnaw your leg off to get even !!! Like I said, they are mini Grizzles, tough as they come don't let those cute little masked faces fool you.

I once cornered a raccoon that has gone into my chicken coop and killed 7 chickens. Once it realized it has no way out it charged me. 3 good strikes from an Easton aluminum bat were needed for a complete stop.

Here in NY it is illegal to relocate them.
You must call a certified person to remove them or burn or bury them.

Or shoot 'em, put 'em in a bag, put the bag in a closed bucket, bag the bucket, and put it out in your trash- that's what I did in 1994- the first year we were in our house, when I had to shoot a clearly rabid coon with my Crosman American Classic BB/Pellet rifle.

We called Animal Control and 911, and they said to just bury it [so my dogs could dig it up???] or put it out in trash- but I didn't want to risk exposure of others...

At first we thought they would test it for rabies, but apparently it's such an epidemic, they now consider it endemic [regularly found among particular animals or in a certain area]...

Last year, I shot one in our "porch" cat's winter house/bed, w/ my .22LR and used the loader and a [decrepit] pallet to move the bed and all down to our fire pit w/o ever touching it and anything it touched.

We have a pair of them hanging around and harassing our cat/eating her food now, and that'll only last until I get a bead on 'em...

See my post above- my Crosman American Classic had nothing on that Gamo Maxim, but it did the job with one .177 lead pellet from 15 feet away- closer than I ever wanted to get., but close enough that the follow up shots [11 pumps each] were superfluous...

A quick google of the specs says that it was rated at 705-730 fps vs the 1200 fps rating of the Gamo- but the Crosman cost <25% of that beast....

I’ve shot plenty of rabbits with my 22 caliber pellet gun and they usually just flop over. I’ve tried shooting groundhogs with it and after 2 attempts of not a quick death I decided it was inadequate for the job and now use a 22lr minimum. I prefer a shotgun though. We don’t have a raccoon problem so I’ve never shot one but I’d assume they’re about the same as a ground hog.

A conibear 220p bucket set trap works very well on the wisest of coons, but I prefer my Springfield and a flashlight. It is great night shoot training and if the shot is placed right that coon won't be back.
The problem with the bucket trap is that it isn't very forgiving; how would you feel if your dog accidently got into it? At least you can release nontarget animals from a foothold trap.
The Raccoon was not relocated to Maine.
I never said tbat you did; yet do you really think tbat it was OK to dump your problems on someone else? Several others agreed with me, and I was not the only one who made that comment.
