Everyone has their own pet thing they like to do and as long as they are having fun good for them! Some people like boating. That can get real expensive quickly too. Or ATVs. Seen a few people invest in a pair of fancy Polaris Rzrs and there goes 40 grand in toys. Or going to Vegas several times a year and gambling. And some people just love to save all their money and not spend anything. Seen many people scrimp and save it all hoping for their glorious retirement when they can use it. Too often it ends with either them dying way too early to ever use it or else they are so ingrained with being frugal that even in retirement they can't bring themselves to spend it so they sit and watch Family Feud all day long. Do what you like as long as you can do it within your means and responsibly. And to h e l l with what anyone else thinks!

It was nearing 40 feet. Definitely too much camper for the truck.

40' is a monster. Probably way more than that 1500 should pull (likely 13-14K dry).

That wasn't really my point. Tell someone that you spent 40G to cut the grass around your house and they will say something or at least think you are nuts. Tell them you spent 60G on a trailer and the same for a truck to pull it, so you can go away for two weeks a year, and they will say that's nice!

I marvel at RV size too. I don't have that kind of money to burn, or want a 30 year note on a camper.

Surprisingly the 5th wheel campers don't hold there value very well and can be purchased Cheap!!! mildly used. And you can have a really nice rolling condo. You just have to hunt for them. The reason being, that not very many people have the 3/4 ton on up truck to pull them.

When I started hunting for a camper for us, I was really kicking myself in the butt for not getting the 3/4 ton duramax that my wife fell in love with. I decided to be practical and by a 1500 Sierra that was half the price

Till emissions stuff bites me bad.

It's a suckers market! With the keeping up with the jones thing, who would come home with a (used) big camper without all those pop-outs and who knows what else they have now (probably granite counter tops) . You would be the laughing stock of the hood! But no one laughs at you with that monster that sits depreciating (it's value and those of the neighborhood) beside your house 50 weeks a year.

Sierra will be paid off in 3 or 4 months. At that point I'm going on the hunt :D

It was either an RV or a Tractor. The Sweet Wife decided I needed the Tractor. No regrets.

Not too much camper, period? For a place to lie your head, grab a bite to eat and have a hot shower?

It seems if you have too much tractor, or other tool, well that's just foolish, a waste of money, but in the RV world, nothing is too stupid and no one says a thing!

You missed the point. Have as big of camper that you want. Just don’t pull it with a 1/2 ton truck.

Massachusetts State Police

What could go wrong? ... Yesterday morning, Trooper Christopher Kaszyk of the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section was on patrol on Route 58 in Carver when he observed a Dodge RAM 5500 truck carrying a medium-sized excavator estimated to weight about 10,500 lbs. In addition to exceeding the truck's acceptable gross vehicle weight rating by 4,450 lbs., the excavator was secured with just one 3-inch strap (with an estimated securing capacity of 3,000 lbs., or less than one-third of the weight of the excavator it was holding in place). The driver was fined for those violations as well as for the weight on the rear axle exceeding the tire ratings, having an expired expiration sticker,a missing wheel fastener, and having no warning flag on the projecting load. Because of the public safety hazards posed by the truck, Trooper Kaszyk placed it out of service until the excavator could be off-loaded.
