Collecting rain water.

Its been brought up for the second time our dot on the map restrictions collecting rain water...2 rain barrels not to exceed 110 gallons and can't use collected rain water for veggies...okay I am :confused2: about this one whats the harm,guess some states its a no-no.

I had no idea this was an issue anywhere. I am guessing that in some states where the water is needed for streams, lakes or whatever, there could be an issue if a huge number of people collected water and thus prevented the natural run off. But my impression of NH - probably in error - is that you would have sufficient rain.

Here in California I collect rain water and use it to water trees, flowers, whatever. But I have not checked to see if there are restrictions on the collection - and most of our rain water ends up in the oceans as the politicians will not provide permits for dams to be built to store that water. So, if I don't collect the rain water I suppose that it - or its equivalent, goes into the ocean at some point,

The only other reason I can see is that if you collect the water and do not use it soon, it could be a place for mosquitos to breed.

Seems dumb and short sighted to me.

I think a lot of these idiotic laws are just testing the waters to see how far they can go. When that hit the books someone should have went to the council meeting and slammed a license plate down and ask them to read what it said, then asked if they understood what it means.

At our cabin in Alaska we collected rain water for household & drinking needs. Used two 55 gallon oak barrels. First barrel had two filtering layers - first was a fine sand then thru half a barrel full of activated charcoal. Second barrel was the storage barrel. Worked great. In the winter we either brought water from home or melted snow.

Somebody suggest in AK what the OP is experiencing in NH. Free ride back to Seattle on an open SeaLand barge.

I tried looking the ordinance up on city website and couldn't find it. I'd be most interested in reading it if you can post it or lead me to it. I can certainly see why restrictions on how water is stored might be necessary in some cases(mosquito control for instance)but to forbid trapping rain falling onto one's property for use in producing food doesn't sound enforceable.
