So...

After dinner, grab the newspaper and go to the restroom on the first floor.

Just sitting there reading, OK, put the newspaper down to grab some other paper to finsih my business, and what do I see on the floor about 3' away from me?

After we put him outside...

I don't really want to dwell on exactly how he got there!

I don't know what kind it is but it sure doesn't appear friendly. I bet that could go beyond "ruin your visit to the hopper" and make for a whole bad day.

Black snake, harmless to humans, although I'll knock em out of trees if I catch them going for a birds nest for eggs (they're amazing climbers).

Probably scared due to the environment.

Wow, not sure how you managed to grab it and take it outside. That would have freaked me enough that I probably would have got a gas can and burned the house down.

I learned by accident years ago if you take one hand fairly close wiggling your fingers you can reach around and grab it with your other hand behind head.
Now...about that snake!

Left hand directly behind the head and right hand halfway down the body so they don't decide to coil up on your arm:laughing:

Funny enough, last night, saying good night to my dad down in the basemen, see something in the corner by the mechanical room door. Small 10" or so copperhead "baby". Hollared up to my wife to grab the gloves, and she brings them down on her hands trying to get the thing into a bucket (why I love her;)) and the thing tries to bite her on the glove. I understand most likely a reactive defensive move by the snake, but that signed it's death warrant when we got it outside.

Been here about 15 years now. One black snake I found in the drop ceiling in the basement about 12 years ago when I was replacing a line set for a new HVAC system (nice coming eye to eye with one while on a ladder), and one I had to get out of the garage some years ago, but 2 different snakes in the same night has me wondering...

Um....Wondering what? Lots of gasoline, a match and stand back. Burn it down. Start over with a concrete bunker that is snake proof.

Sorry, snakes and me go way back and can't stand them. If they are in the yard I will encourage them to go away without a death penalty. If they even look at me funny....different story altogether. In the house....women and children had best start looking at cold war era bunker designs they might like to replace the ashes of the house with.

I know, I know....my wife (from your neck of the woods) tells me black snakes are a good thing and kill mice etc.....me, I'll buy mouse traps.

The first year we had our current home, we had garter snakes in the garage and they would climb onto the garage doors and lay on one of the panels. I opened the garage door and had one fall a foot from me from overhead. Wife had to take the gas can from me....and that was just a silly garter snake.
